The girls aren't just a selection of hotties for the MC to possibly stick his dick in, they're each a character of their own right and actually feel diverse from one another compared to many harems where you'll get plenty of clones (big titted blonde, big titted purple/blue hair, etc and so on).

I didn't really hate it, but I can see how some people probably felt their love for the franchise wearing thing since it was yet another reboot of the "Tenchi meets the girls" story, except without the loose retelling of the Kagato story like Universe wound up being. I imagine some people would probably say the story could have dropped a few episodes and trimmed up the narrative to make the main plot flow more steadily.

What's wrong with Kiyone? While she did (albeit indirectly) make Mihoshi a complete retard in the series she was part of, she still had a lot of fun qualities on top of a great body. Ayeka I'd say was at her best in the original OVAs, with her (and to some extent Ryoko) being made into something of a gag with the two anime after.

It's one of the granddaddies of harem anime with a great set of characters with interesting histories. The setting is cool, the aesthetics are nice and the world building was done well, delivering tons of discussion potential. Good mixture of drama and humor. It told the "you're the chosen one" story archetype pretty well over the course of the first OAV, with the 2nd one opening up the universe lore and mysteries even more, both of which had a good mix of 4 episodes if everyday buildup and 2 climax episodes of "holy shit, it's happening!", with the "Night before the carnival" OAV being a great teaser in between seasons of stuff to come.
The whole premise was so good that it managed to sustain AIC/Pioneer's venture to milk the shit out of it with spinoffs. On the one hand, I hate the flanderized versions most characters became in the tv series, on the other hand, the tv format is also one of the reasons why Tenchi managed to get as big as it did. The retarded part was to abandon the OAV timeline for as long as they did. The actual story for OAV 3 was pretty cool, especially is you see some of the abandoned storyboarded stuff for OAV3 (e.g. Misaki going berserk in the future). But a long time has passed and the episode count wasn't enough to tell the whole story properly and we got something that both felt like it wastes time and was overly rushed at the same time, as they didn't know whether they'd get another OAV after that.
Kenshi's adventures on Geminar were a genuinely fun sequel and I wish we'd get another adventure with him, as Tenchi is a spacetime god now not really viable as a series lead anymore. I enjoyed the cultural scifi aspect of Isekai, as a lot of spotlight was thrown on why the society and male/female roles have developed as they did, all the while having a great cast of best girls.

I think that the sole problem with the Ryo-Ohki series is that it takes too long for each season to come out, and sometimes when they do come out they aren't given enough time to tell the story fully.
Even Geminar felt a bit rushed, especially towards the end.
Tenchi Muyo is both the granddaddy of harem genre and also the black sheep. It handles harem in a very different way that no other series has been able to replicate, though many have tried.
It's also why Tenchi Muyo as a series doesn't really work well when ever the producers try to "modernize it", because they then try to make it like every other harem series out there. And that's just not how Tenchi rolls.

Thing is Tenchi Muyo despite it being a harem series doesn't focus on fanservice as much as you'd expect. Even the MC despite despite being OP as fuck isn't given some sob story for chunni to self insert into. Instead they're really just down to earth guys. Where even if their lives are really interesting (like Kenshi's) they still take a back seat to the girls who are given time and space to showcase their personalities and form a deep bond not just with the male MC but also with each other. So it explains why the harem actually works.
This is compounded with actual world building which makes you want to see more of them.

I think Tenchi Muyo does 2 things better than the rest when it comes to harem antics. One, it actually heads for harem end, even when people didn't immediately know back then and two, the whole setting makes harem end seem viable without crashing your suspension of disbelief. The first one serves to mellow out the faction wars between fans. Fav girl talk became mostly banter, once everyone realized that no one's going to lose out. Compare that to the shitshow most other discussions for (not really) harem series turn into, with people arguing as if their own well-being depended upon their pick "winning". The 2nd point serves to make the harem end not feel like a cop out, but a natural end where all is well that ends well.
Case in point, that's why TLD:Darkness felt so comfortably while Momo pursued her harem end and also why the manga almost ended on a bad note, when after all the shit that happened, Rito still went "muh Haruna" near the end.
