80s and 90s dubs often had the advantage of being extremely liberal with the translation, if not totally making up a new script. This helped allow for better acting and emotion since you didn't have to restrict yourself to trying to imitate what the Japanese actors were doing. 80's dubs also had the advantage of having actual talent and voice actors. The Fist of the North Star movie dub had James Avery (Shredder in 80s/90s TMNT and Uncle Phil) as a minor villain, and Raou was voice by the voice director of Transformers and G.I. Joe, a man who notoriously made some of those actors keep doing scenes over and over until they were coughing up blood and got it "right" to his standards.

The VHS dub of Lupin III: Count of Cagliostro is literally the only dub I've ever liked better than the sub. VHS version was just perfect, the quality was lousy but it was just so good. Then the fans begged for it to be re-released on DVD and they did it with 'improved audio' and it just wasn't the same. Never been so disappointed.

Sure not everything was great. A lot of OVAs were downright hilariously awful, and sometimes outright retarded changes were made to scripts, but youre kidding yourself if you think modern day dubs are just as good or better. Modern dub VAs often cant even voice act at all.
