Just watched FMA 2003 and I'm doing Brotherhood now. Brotherhood has none of the soul of 2003. The comedy and the serious scenes are worse, along with the OST. Only once in a while do they have a better frame or some superior animation.

Keep in mind that Brotherhood's first couple of episodes are sloppy, to say the least. The series starts to improve from Hughes' death onwards.
Then again, FMA '03 also had a few stinkers in its first half, like the filler episodes with that dude who created dolls and the busty thief girl.

I'm so glad the original anime didn't have ninja Naruto DBZ-tier shonen fights with energy blasts and final forms. It focused more on the actually good scenes (brother's relationships, Nina Tucker, Maes Hughes, etc.) Even the open-ended ending of 03 was better than Edward beating God and the Truth with the power of friendship. That felt like a generic jrpg story. FMA's strong suit was always drama, but normies like action more. The drama was better in the older anime.
