The Johto series had a couple of interesting episodes until it devolved into a worse filler hell than fucking Naruto. And they scrapped the GS ball story line too.

That was one of two endings; the other was that Pikachu led an uprising against humanity. In Shudo's books Ash is a horrible trainer and Pikachu figures out how to win the Boulder Badge on its own.

Best Wishes went to shit after both the earthquake and the revelation that the games were getting a sequel instead of a third version, forcing even more last minute rewritings than the earthquake did. The BW league was almost all garbage and the island hopping filler was borderline unwatchable. Sun and Moon has its moments, but it's disappointing overall, being basically that island hopping filler shit except they barely ever even hop islands and it's 3 years instead of 5 months.

After Johto, the series got too large for its own good so episodes were focused on loosely adapting the bland as shit events from the games instead of having an actual creative team come up with original and interesting stories like in Kanto.

Yes, those were fun. Pokemon being cool and shit is great and all, but at least for me, the idea that legendary Pokemon can cause all this world ending destruction yet are still relatively easily captured by humans in mechanical balls kinda ruins half the appeal if it's taken seriously. Instead, it's much more enjoyable to be more lighthearted and silly and leave the big scary Pokemon as mysteries kinda like Big Foot / Lochness Monster etc etc. I'm unsure of how others feel about it when they were kids, but when I was a kid and learned about animals, I never needed some little kid my age sticking their nose in every dinosaur or shark's business to find those creatures cool. It was much more awesome in my young mind when they were 'larger than life' so to speak instead of glorified pets.

A good episode for example was the Dragonite lighthouse episode. Meanwhile for the smaller and more common Pokemon the appeal was always in their interactions and how they lacked proper language communication, which made body language all the more focused. After all, Pokemon are fictional innovations of organisms in our world, why waste all that time with talking heads and speech when you can focus on what's truly different about them?

Following a loser around is just boring, in any other series a character like Ash would be part of the supporting cast at best. The pokemon word has such good potential, I for once would like to see someone who actually gets shit done.

Imo, after Kanto. Got slightly better after Hoenn. Fell off a cliff during BW. Came back strong during XY. SM is decent.

Well, they still sort of are. They get relegated to appear only in special pokemon movies for the most part. It's a symptom of Ash being the only protagonist who goes to all regions that he meets them all, or in the games, no npc will have them so it's because the player went after them and the game character is some sort of prodigy.

I don't know, I thought Kanto, Johto, Hoenn and Unova were okay. I did enjoy Sinnoh and Kalos a lot despite the league endings since for Kalos I enjoyed the Team Flare saga afterwards more. Alola though needs a overhaul.
Ash is one of the most iconic characters in fictional history along side the likes of Goku and Luffy. He isn't going anywhere.
