Which do you prefer, moralfags or MCs with a serious edge to them?
Which do you prefer, moralfags or MCs with a serious edge to them?
Hypocritical assholes who do both good and bad things on a whim.
really I have to admit I am quite fond of edgefags
mostly because I'm a sadomasochist and love seeing people get dominated. Though you lose me as soon as you get a series with nothing but edge. If there's no light in the end of the tunnel, if there's no celebration of the edge MC's triumph or edge MC's karmic downfall I tend to get bored. I want an edge series not a torture porn. It also needs to be karmic. Nothing turns me off of a series than the MC harming someone that didn't deserve it. Give me a 20 or so chapters where the edge MC tortures a mustache-twirling villain that spend several chapters being a dick to everyone anyday.
Moralfags conversely are hard to pull off since you're probably going to see thousands of them. But if you do those are the ones you build legacies around.
depends on the world they are in edgy can be cringy but so can moral fags
Moralfags like mob are the worst.
Re, tst
Edge, but justified edge. Also when they don't hesitate to kill is cool.
The execution matters the most. They can be whatever as long as it's execute well.
this is the safest bet
any type of MC can be good as long as they're executed well, even male MCs
depends really. usually i prefer edgefags but moralfags can be good as long as they're done decently
>moralfags can be good as long as they're done decently
Name just one.
Honestly this applies to most parts of the film. a trash production can make an amazing premise into trash and a wonderful production can make a boring sounding premise into gold.
This is why I think discussion should less talk about individual parts of an anime but how they worked or didn't work together.
Probably MC that is edgy that is done right
Moralfags are just a safe route for writer to take and are boring
MCs with strong convictions.
If he says he's gonna kill the demon lord then I better see a dead demon lord by the end of the run.
I don't care as long the MC ain't mumbling under his own breath when facing either random or worse his actual enemy. Neither a goody two shoes or an edge lord will cut it if they let themselves get shited on.
Depends on the rest of the works factors. One isn't better for me than the other, it's all in how it's employed.
Wolfwood was in the right, admit it
The best is both
Kenshin
I've come to greatly appreciate the moral fag these days. I like a hero with ideals that he stands by and struggles to keep them.
Yang Wenli.
Exactly. I personally don't find an archetype more compelling than the character that struggles with virtue and meaning in the face of incredible challenge, death and nihilism.
B-but muh moral vs edge war!! You people need to fight!! Don't make peace, noooo!!
The "cold blooded" edgy MC.
Edge makes for better entertainment even if it silly.
moralfag is just boring and annoying because they're predictable.
there you have it. digits and namefagging. can't top this.
i fucking HATE you
I had my edgy phase in the past, but I think I just started to finally get how important it is to have a moral back bone. Reading some older X-men books I find myself really liking Cyclops a lot more. Not meme RIGHT clops but good old fashioned boy scout slim. Between the responsibility of being the leader it's just cool to see someone who actually believes in the dream.
Serious autists.
Fuck you, Lulu.
that's a tripfag not a namefag you fucking newfag
potato, paretard
How are edgelords NOT predictable? There's only ever so many avenues a story or character can take. More to the point a strongly defined character will always have some degree of predictability to them because if they have that definition then it will always be somewhat obvious how they're going to react and if they DON'T then this divergence or swerve is only meaningful WHEN they have that predictability established. And frankly a story or character shouldn't be about SHOCKING your viewer because while you may be able to tell that Super-man will always do the right thing, it's about HOW he does it.
As long as they're hotblooded
angry moralfags, especially ones that don't kill but aren't afraid to whoop serious ass
Hey don't talk to my son like that
Araragi is the best, isn't he, user?
Moralfags that kills
so.... Shield-chad?
Morally grey. Not totally unencumbered by morals, but definitely willing to go far to reach their goals.
Actual edgey MC's or MC's that pose as edgelords but are actually really based are always preferable to outright moralfags.
Rare examples of moralfag MC's done right indeed. How did Trigun and RK get right what other moralfag MC's got wrong?
MCs who are neither moralfags nor edgelords.
>not moralfag mc gone nuclear
name one
Shu from Guilty Crown
They built the story around the character's moral faggotry. Their values are so vital to their characters that even if they COULD destroy their enemies if they broke their vows the act of doing so would break them as people and watching people struggle to uphold an idea they place over their own lives is engaging.
>even male MCs
I can smell your yeast infection from here, disgusting
Straight-edge moralfags are boring, and pure edge isn't likable. Neither are defined as characters in themselves, they're defined by either strict adherence or knee-jerk contrarianism to what's expected of them.
Of course there's hardly any pure ideal heroes anymore and extreme edgelord anti-heroes are even more out of fashion. It's easier and more natural to write flawed heroes who fall in between. The hard part is getting the right balance to both suit the story and be likable, and even harder from there is naturally building up their character from the baseline principles that were set.
For an MC to be strong, their values/ideals/facets of their character need to be clearly defined in the audience's view. They need to be predictable to some extent, the audience should have at least some idea of what's important to them, in what way, and why. In this way I would say moralfags tend to be better than edgelords; edgelords by definition try to push the boundaries of the audience's expectations, but if you really don't have any sense of why they're doing what they're doing or what lines even they won't cross, then their character isn't really defined and it's practically impossible to build a story around them. A moralfag/"good" character will just default to basic standards of decency and be boring for however long it takes for their character to form, while an edgelord can very easily actively make their series unappealing to a wider audience, or at least do something early on that permanently stains the character's image.
A character becomes strong in their own right when they break free of the standard moralfag/edgelord dichotomy (adhering to or going against general expectations) and set the audience's expectations of them by defining themselves with their own code of action.
Moralfags with a serious edge to them.
Because they were good at their skills despite not going 100% due to the morals weighing them down.
weak moral fag is just annoying while weak edgelord is just a coward.
at the end of the day, competence is all that matters
Moralfag MC with an slutty edgy femMC.
MC can be moral or edgy but I think you usually get better drama if he's not at either extreme. If he's either a saint or a Dark-Knight-Joker sort of madcap mayhem figure it's less interesting, because these people never have any *internal struggle*. The saint always knows what's right and does it and never feels any doubts or guilt, and the Joker does whatever he wants and never feels any doubts or guilt. As Faulkner said in his Nobel Prize acceptance speech, true drama comes from the heart at war with itself. You only get that where there's SOME moralfag and SOME edge in a character, although obviously different proportions are possible. See picture for example. Edgy wrapped around moral.
MCs with defined yet normal personality. I have no idea why this is such a rarity. No, blank self-inserts are not that.
I like edge as long as they're poked fun of/become tsun about it or it's portrayed comically at least a small amount of the time (Hiei being probably the best example I can think of). If it's played 100% serious all the time it's kind of lame or boring but I'm definitely happy to see some edgy stuff.
>no idea what this is such a rarity
Because it's harder to do. If a character has certain traits which are away from the norm, they can be exaggerated. e.g. you can have a tall, thin character, so you can have a VERY tall, thin character. You can have quiet/bubbly, so you can have VERY quiet/bubbly.
But by definition you can't have VERY normal. So to make someone normal-yet-distinct-and-individual needs subtle and and skillful writing. What makes a "normal" person an individual is their inner life and a lot of very small touches.
moralfags who fight/kill people when they have to.
I don't. He will always be my favorite MC.
Cecily Campbell
>even male MCs
You are subhuman. And probably a woman, but that's implied.
Based.
Thorfinn.
Dunno, so far the only MC's I liked ever have been Lelouche and Rintaro.
So...autistic meme smart?
edgy moralfags
completely missed the point
hey I said they can be good
what more do you want from me?
I like practical MC's who treat their friends good but wouldn't hesitate to do very questionable things if it helped their goals
