Why was the King even afraid of the Shield Hero? Given that he was formerly one of the Seven Star Heroes who was also a war hero that massacred thousands of demi-humans, I'd assume he was at a pretty high level and plenty strong even if he's no longer a hero.

There are many individuals in this world who has the strength to be on par with or even overpower the 4 holy heroes as they are right now, including Naofumi. At this point of the story the 4 heroes are nowhere near the strongest. Surely the man who was once called the Hero King, assuming that he ranked among the top individuals would be able to crush Naofumi even without his Seven Star weapon.
The seven sins weapons although strong, are not omnipotent as any strong individual will be able to defeat its wielder like Eclare and Rishia have managed to defeat Ren and Itsuki respectively while they were using their strongest seven sins skills.
