There has been too many issues regarding those sites. Shut downs duo to copyrights, hacked by 3rd parties, uploaders being arrested.

It beats downloading because i live in a rural area with bad internet connection, and KissAnime gives me the option to reduce the quality to 480p, also downloading, and peer-to-peer filesharing via torrent are illegal while streaming is more of a gray zone where police won't even bother.

There never were any. Remember most fansub/encoding groups need to host their own files and use some gratuitous adclick links or just paywall with premium filehosts, but what can you do server costs exist.

Streaming sites have none of this upkeep and host on public video streaming sites like megaupload back in the day, but still watermark and adspam everywhere they can. They've actually fallen behind the official services even with their shit bitrates and terrible localizations.
