When I search character names or couple names + site:geocities.co.jp on google after setting my location and search results to Japanese I get thousands to tens of thousands of hits. I'm worried a ton of pages will get lost because the owners haven't maintained them for years.
On the bright side, the ones that I've checked on archive.org have all been archived, and with dates within the last few weeks, so someone out there might be deliberately trying to archive these sites before they die. Now if only the Wayback Machine had a way to search the content of archived websites like a normal search engine.

It was a really active and exciting time in Japanese DC fandom. There seemed to be an inexhaustible supply of fansites that were always appearing and disappearing. And no one had any idea the series would still be around 19 years later and that not even a year's time would pass in the story.

I really fucking missed out then. If you dont mind me asking, how old are you? In 2000 I was like 8 and just starting to fuck around with my grandpa's business computers and had no idea Conan was a thing. It wasn't until 2003 or so that I started finding places exist like fansites but I only saw a few for american things like Simpsons or... Alf. It took all the way until 2007 for me to even start looking for places to discuss anime and I can't remember any of em.

I'm 34. I got into Conan in the late 90s. There wasn't an official DC broadcast in my country at the time, but I lived near a neighboring country and watched dubbed anime on their TV channels. Looking up fansites was second nature for me by that time because when I first got access to the internet at the public library in 1995 I got involved in stuff like Star Trek and X-Files fandom. I was a homeschooled kid so I had a lot of free time on my hands.

Sounds like a good time. Here in America I dont think we had any broadcasts by extension that had Conan until the official airing on adult swim in 2004, which I didn't catch much of. I wish I did but I didn't know about it until around the time it was taken off the air.

Nah, it was just a popular style back then. A lot of the amateur artists use each other as inspiration, like you see on Deviantart.

I found an old Digimon Tamers fansite a while ago where most of the art was also in that sort of style. It's quite nice.

It seemed to be common among artists who used Paint Tool SAI in the 2000s. I like it too, it has kind of a dreamy misty feel. Erotic illustrations look pleasantly surreal when drawn in that way.

Has anyone made subs based off the R2J DVD raws like the NAOKI-Raws&倉吉観光協会 rips on Nyaa? They seem to be the highest quality video sources as far as I've found for the episodes that haven't been remastered.

Nah, I've never created subbed stuff before even if it'd just be redoing preexisting ones. I use Naoki for getting pictures or clips in better quality than the Case Closed DVDs or the copies going around with subs. I always assumed aside from certain instances that the old subs come from the raw DVDs but that just because of how old they are they're lower quality.

Why hasn't anything surpassed the reunion with the black organization arc with sherry?

Since we've got a conan thread, what's up with the WinxBloom1980 releases? Are they better quality than the subbed releases?

I wasn't sure if some other sub group had used those raws since there seem to be several different fansub versions of those early episode floating around, and I've only seen the ones on AnimeBytes. I assumed everyone just used the Funi subs. It would probably be a pain to put them on the Naoki raws because the timing might need adjustment.

While going through Nyaa fansub releases and reading the comments, I came across this discussion: nyaa.si/view/1079367#comments I didn't know so many of the post-Funi DC fansubs still in circulation have questionable translation quality, including some DCTP releases. So is it the consensus that Kienai, Baaro, and M-L are the more reliable groups?
I found this comment especially interesting:

Kogoro and the old officer fell asleep while Narumi, Ran, and Conan were up when the inspector arrived. Conan handed Megure the sheet music and then went back to bed some time after that and before Megure woke up Kogoro.

What do you like about Jerry Jewell's performance?

I suppose in general its his voice fitting the design, whenever I hear Jewell I see Shinichi rather than any other role. He has a nice soothing tone, but he also manages to make the more excitable moments from Kudo (or Conan's thoughts) really cute, like when he geeks out over Holmes or the fanmail. The few times within the dub when he actually screams (transforming back to Conan, saving Ran from being shot in Movie 3) sends chills down my spine. Hhis voice is just really cool.

Case Closed seemed to try and have the dialogue/acting not feel too cartoony and exaggerated, aside from Genta and some one-offs, and I think Jerry's delivery of a lot of lines makes the script better. I've considered making a video with some clips of his lines sometime because youtube doesn't have most of the ones I really like.

On the subject, I also feel Kevin M. Connolly was an equally top tier choice for Heiji for most of the same reasons. It made me like the duo a lot, despite the fact that most of their exchanges were through Conan's VA. His deliveries were also really enjoyable. I think the same can technically be said for R. Bruce Elliott as Kogoro. Another good voice for the long exposition scenes just like with Jewell and Connolly.

I wish Jerry got more main character roles, Case Closed is the only time I'm aware of. He's usually one-off characters or recurring like the Principal in MHA.

I'm disappointed that you're being PC over an actually good joke with reactions from the cast rather than Kogoro running into a bar and saying blacks get out.

I don't find being called a jungle person a funny and "Kogoro" was my favorite character in the show.

If you saw this at 9 years old I doubt you'd even understand the jungle thing.

Stick to watching shows with all black casts, anime isn't made for you.

On its own I dont find racial humor very funny, I'm usually unmoved by it. A case by case individual joke can be obnoxious of course depending. The only reason I find it funny here is because it's sudden and out of nowhere for DC, and it gets appropriate reactions from the cast.

You can rest easy knowing that Kogoro isn't actually racist nor does this kind of humor see itself prevalent in the franchise. Aside from "lol all the culprits are black how racist is that??" this is the only true instance I ever remember something like this happening, which is why its funny to me. If Kogoro was always saying "damn jungle people in MY JAPAN" it'd lose its humor very fast, like Family Guy where nothing is genuine and it exists just to get a rise out of everyone and they don't even feel like characters. Not that racist characters automatically have no value (it really depends how they and the characters around them are written.)

Kogoro is an idiot. Kogoro is the best character on the show. I sincerely hope this one jab isn't enough to ruin him for you. I should also clarify that the cultural difference between someone in America writing the same scene and someone in Japan writing it is very drastic. I rarely care about people being offended but I don't want you being sour over Kogoro or Conan as a series for this one bit.

This is the first time I've ever seen someone offended over Detective Conan. It makes sense it'd be that joke but damn.

You overestimate how many people saw Case Closed past midnight on an adult channel sandwiched between Aqua Teen Hunger Force and Inuyasha reruns and how many were offended by anything at all relating to it, who even saw it.

They look the exact fucking same, she could just check a childhood photo or something.

There was an entire special about her seeing a photo of her and Shinichi as kids and getting worried about Conan. He managed to get out of it because his mom showed up and started playing support. The rest of the special was him being a momma's boy, riding between her breasts on a motorcycle, her wanting to bathe with him, joking with him about bathing with Ran, etc.

Good episode. I've always loved Yukiko's suit in it.
