Young Nihei was a hack with no narrative ability who only got popular because of his edgy art. Knights of Sidonia is at least decent if you wanna give that a shot, but every other manga by him is barely intelligible Michael Bay garbage

The guy wanted to draw megastructures so he drew megastructures. If that upsets you feel free to read anything else.

I don't blame Nihei for drawing, I blame the scores of faggots who can't tell the difference between atmosphere building and pretention and dropped it a bunch of 10/10s, holding the man back for several years afterwards while he drew mediocre garbage in an attempt to recreate his original success. If you don't call shit shit, it will never get better.

You've read that quote of his, yes? You know the one. Someone will post it. That's a pretty interest way of interpreting his career, but unfortunately not a very realistic one.

Kino.
fuck off, you retard.

>writes a space haremshit story
>gets locked into an unwinnable battle of attrition
>realizes he can't dig himself out of this hole
>writes a bullshit ending
he's still a hack

>thinks Blame is bad
>thinks Sidonia is good
step up your bait game, baka

OP pic is pretty much the only time it was actually hard to follow and it didn't even matter that much since even if most people won't get what happened the first time reading the outcome of this was explained clearly.

I personally think his highest point drawing-wise was, unfortunately, during the trash period between Blame and Sidonia. Blame was awful because the man had no sense of how to direct action scenes or dynamic movement despite his good static linework for his crazy robotic monstrosities and Sidonia was probably dumbed down a little too much. At least he's really good at drawing bears.

Blame employs visual storytelling. Observe. Speculate. Tie the ends together.

His best art is definitely in Abara and Digimortal.

It's kind of funny, Blame! was almost "wasted" being done as early in his career as it was.

On a related note, I don't get the hate of Aposimz for its art. The story is shounen bullshit but the heavy use of white and negative space makes sense because of the cold and snowy setting. The fuzzy look of heavy freshly snowed landscapes is something I'm familiar with and Aposimz art does a good job of capturing that.

My wife Sanakan.

I cant even find Aposimz anywhere online, did the ending of Sidonia piss people off that much?

Just imagine if the storytelling in Aposimz was like Blame. Instead of people explaining how their powers work and fighting all the time we'd have slow exploration of the planet. I'd also like to see more of the weird creatures that could kill you or become your food like in the early chapters. I really wish it was a slower manga with less characters.

I didn't imagine that Blame would work well with such bright and rich colors, but I feel like the net animation pulls it off somehow.
Reminds me of the Persona 3 cutscenes in a way.

Yeah, that's what I was trying to say. There's nothing inherently wrong with a deeply visual storytelling experience and a slow-burn of worldbuilding, but first, the art was shit, and second, the man was working out of his ass at least 50% of the time rather than having everything scripted. As a result, there's little cohesiveness to the pacing of the story and the relevance of non-major characters, and large swaths of time are spent on weird tangents just to satisfy the man's art boner. The parallel dimension thing during the forwarding just flat out didn't need to happen off the top of my head.

That all was just a function of having little experience as a mangaka, which is unfortunate since the setting and overarching plot of Blame is probably Nihei's best. His newness unfortunately comes through too brightly to ignore and it all turns into a sloppy mess as a result. That is why, yes, I think Sidonia is a better story despite it being packed full of meme tropes: it at least tells a complete story from beginning to end and all the characters have some narrative purpose and/or complete character arc that they go through. That's not to say I don't think modern Nihei could make a god-tier Blame; he's just creatively bankrupt after pitching so many ideas and Aposimz not really working out. I hope he gets back into a stride at some point and produces one final masterpiece instead of fading into retirement.

Obligatory

the movie had everything going for it except the plot. The soundtrack is especially excellent.
