I'm two episodes in and I'm sorta torn at the moment. The art it beautiful, but that's also a bit of a problem. It's a little too pretty for what is supposed to be a post war setting. I dunno a small point I guess. Like you expect to see busted up buildings and dirty, poor people and men that have been maimed in war but you don't. At worst some guys have small scars or no wounds from this seemingly long and terrible war. Do they just kill anyone that was wounded in action? It's a weird juxtaposition to see such a beautiful setting and people with the backstory we're given.

I really can't get over how autistic Violet is. Does she ever calm it down? But I also feel like her terminal autism is kind of the only quirk this show has. If she was more normal it'd just be a cute girl doing cute things. There were a lot of missed opportunities in how kyoani went about building the world for VEGgie Tales. As far as I'm aware, Violet's prostetics are high-end and she got them because of the prestige of the Major and her adoptive caretaker is the son of a major banking family. It would have been great to see other people with lower-end prosthetic, or even hooks and peg legs to demonstrate that Violet's are special.

Violet's autism remains a constant. Personally, I really liked how everyone around her behaved. It struck me as very true to life about how difficult it is to deal with autists. Rather than hand-waving away Violet's behavior as quirky, it comes across as a serious issue that has to be dealt with patiently.

I'm not going to drop the show. I think it's good so far, those were just some complaints I had. I think it's wonderfully animated and has the potential to be a great story on the transition from war to peace. I just finished episode 4 though and I feel like the characters are on the cusp of actually teaching Violet something and yet they hold back. It's happened more than once now, but it's like she's close to learning a real lesson in how humans act but then it's sort of dropped. Case in point: how she reacts during Iris's birthday. Iris explains why she didn't want that guy to come and it seems like Violet sorta gets it. But then Violet is like "well let's write him an apology and explain how you feel" which is totally missing the whole characterization of Iris up til that point. Ultimately I guess it seems like the characters keep underestimating her autism.

I do want to know more about Violet in general though. Why was she fighting in this war, why is she like this? Can she change at all? How does she react to the truth about the major? Those parts of the show I do like.
