I'm not sure about "the majority of the fanbase", but Yuuna herself was a rather bland character to me. Even after the Season 2 tacked-on moment of weakness, which only made her seem a little pathetic. Even shonen mcs went through better character development.

The happy ending was what made the show. It’s not like it was going to come anywhere close to Madoka. Had they gone the edge route it would have just been embarrassingly bad. What would have been a bland 7/10 bargain bin Madoka became a 9/10 anime that properly differentiated itself, simply because of the beautiful and cathartic ending.
Now if only S2 wasn’t a rushed piece of shit.
