Dragon Ball is still the best shonen of all time

You read it if you want a fun adventure. There's other stuff in there, but the fun adventuring part is the main draw. It reminds me of early dragon ball chapters, where there's a heavy emphasis on comedy and everybody had their own little goals they were pursuing, and ultimately it ends with Luffy/Goku clobbering some dickhead bad guy that had it coming.

Over time OP does become more melodramatic in the way DB did, but it always recenters itself on that adventuring fun aesthetic in a way DB never managed to do.

OP isn't a fun adventure. It's a formulaic repetition machine with the most emotionally manipulative writing I've ever seen outside of literal propaganda. I couldn't ever get into it at all just on that basis. Also, the manga art is a horrible cluttered mess and the fights are easily the worst out there of any big modern shonen.

I never understood why Cell even gave a shit once he reached perfect form. The slaughters made sense when he needed to absorb more power, but what was even motivating him in the end? He didn't care about Gero or his revenge and the only thing he seemed to be interested in was fighting strong people to test his limits. Wouldn't it make more sense for him to let Goku and the gang live so they can keep trying to challenge him? It's not like he'd even have to threaten to kill people to get them to fight either, they all love fighting strong opponents as well.

I have and I hated it. I've given it as many chances as I could and every time It just confirms what I already knew about it. I've got plenty of series I'm already reading that I actually enjoy, so no thanks. Best shonen mango are still SD, Kinnikuman, DB, HnK and Ashita no Joe. Outside of being the best seller series in history, I don't think OP has made any narrative or technical contribution to the genre the way those series I mentioned have. Simple as that for me.

Yeah, Cell's goal should have been world or universe domination, being feared and praised as a God by everyone and going to different planets to look for a strong opponent. And maybe killing people here and there to motivate them to train. It doesn't make sense for him to nuke earth and get bored by all eternity without people to interact with.

How can anyone care about a DB character?

How was killing normal humans supposed to alleviate boredom or test his power? Destroying the entire planet wouldn't have even been a task that takes more than a few seconds. Goku and the other saiyans were the only beings who could possibly take him to the limit and all of them except for Gohan would be happy to fight him over and over while trying to improve. Being callous about the insignificant humans would be understandable, but where the fuck does the drive to eliminate them and the only people who could possibly liven up his existence? If he had won, he'd basically just have to float around in space hoping to win the lottery on actually finding an inhabited planet with a race that might even begin to be able to challenge him. He should have basically just fucked off to the wilderness and told Goku and Vegeta to show up every Tuesday for tea and fisticuffs.

No that's not actually what emotionally manipulative means. It's called characters emoting to something they just experienced and you being obviously too autistic to empathize with the characters you're reading about and having a literal alien-tier reaction of thinking somebody is trying to manipulate you because the characters are showing emotions that aren't screaming with rage or stone-faced exposition delivery.

The Buu arc was better than the Cell arc though, by a large margin. The whimsical nature of some characters like Buu and Gotenks was just Toriyama getting back to the serie's roots. It certainly beats the overly serious and ominous boring crap in the Cell run, especially once the initial glow of the sci-fi aspects of that arc vanished.

Caballeros del Zodiaco is the best shonen of all times, followed by YYH and Samurái X

Goku Time and especially the Goku & Vegeta Show ruined Dragon Ball's legacy, even Saintia Sho is better

Most of the main cast is extremely likeable though, despite not having all that much dept to speak of. The only other shonen crew as immediately likeable I can think of is YuYu Hakusho's and Kinnikuman's. We're talking about something very subjective here, though.

That "threat" about killing every human was just to get Goku and everyone to show up to his tournament, otherwise they wouldn't have much of an incentive other than "but he's the bad guy". He was announcing it on live television after all.
He only decided to destroy earth because he didn't want to lose to Gohan, but that probably wasn't his goal from the beginning.

That sounds like a better ending. Still do the Cell games but make it clear he won't kill anybody even if they lose as he wants them to forever keep him entertained. He's evil of course so maybe have him say that he'll destroy some city everytime they lose to keep them motivated. Everything would play the same, once Goku gives up and it's Gohan's turn Cell would still get a bit too hyped about his hidden potential and kill 16 to trigger him because instead of waiting a few months more he wants to fight him right there.
But it's hard to imagine him not blowing up after he gets vastly surpassed by SS2 I think that was a legit reaction since his whole purpose was being perfect and this kid just easily beat him, suicide is in character. If he got beat after an epic fight with Goku after a few years of sparring that's fine, but losing to a Gohan throwing a tantrum is something else.

But assuming he survives and flies away to train, the Buu arc would be so much better. Early on we'd get Cell vs Dabura somewhere in space with Cell winning after a nice fight thinking it's time to go back to earth since now he might be stronger than SS2 Gohan... Only to get destroyed by Buu since his fight have him the energy to awaken. He comes back to help with ITT at some point later on, it'd be fun.

All these things were rendered meaningless ten minutes after they happened. Cell saga was where rampant unrestrained powercreep happened where Piccolo was demoted from fighter to cheerleader and Vegeta became a joke repeating "muh pride" over and over. Dragonball never quite recovered from the Cell arc.

Goten and Trunks were like Gohan level who was half as strong as he was when he was a kid. Goku and Vegeta were stronger than Teen Gohan by a large degree. This was before years and years of training. Caulifla was comparable to Vegeta/Goku in base. Goten and Trunks have experienced no growth.

First Broly movie is great and has probably the best background art of the whole franchise, which is saying a lot

Cell saga had some of Tori's best set ups, planning the gimmick of "going beyond the Super Saiyan" a long time before Gohan actually manages to do it, and better than the set up of the actual Super Saiyan in the previoua arc where it's just barely mentioned by Vegeta. In the Cell arc we actually see attempts and failures to go beyond the SS with Goku Trunks and Vegeta. When SS2 actually happens it's great. Cell is likewise a great villain with all his own flaws leading up to his demise, and the fact they came from the people he's made of is cool (Vegeta's arrogance and Goku's addiction to fighting and wanting to fight the strongest, making Cell want to set up a tournament and to see Gohan turn SS2)
The worst thing about it is that's where characters began to become useless save for the Saiyans

I honestly think Cell arc is responsible for many of the tropes people usually criticise DB for.
Buu arc starts off pretty weak, but as soon as Buu joins it drops any pretence of seriousness and just goes full retard, and it's the funnies it's been since kid Goku.

Let's not even mention that despite being a "Gohan is actually the strongest" arc Gohan does absolutely NOTHING for the entire arc up to that point. It's not unexpected in a clever way. It's unexpected because at this point Gohan was less relevant to the arc than KRILLIN. Kid was basically YAMCHA tier up til then.
