Playing it safe with the main couple being a generic childhood friend genki and tsundere combo. Meanwhile they provided much more interesting dynamics in every other pair with the yaoi rivalry of KuroMaya, the wierd combination of comfiness and yandere in Junnana, and the master/servant thing with FutaKao. Strangely for having the most screentime I feel like Hikari and Karen were the most underwritten characters. It says something when the jealous loser character in Mahiru becomes more popular than your MC, although from what I've seen reported Mahiru is also one of the most popular character amongst actual Jap women/lesbians, so that might explain somethings. Plus it doesn't help that following the first show and anime Karen and Hikari have completed all their goals and are now directionless, unlike the other characters whose stories more naturally allow them to continue.
