I used to love and adore Whitefox, but I haven't eanestly liked anything they produced since 2013.

Ditto for P.A. Works since 20114 save one sequel.

I like Kyoani's approach to animation but I haven't wistfully enjoyed anything they made since 2010.

Bones I a ambitous studio I still generally like, but they tend to get bogged down in stupid shit like the Eureka 7 films, retellings, reboots and sequels and the Marvel colab was didn't end up creating decent anime. And now they wast their time animating a generic shounen meal-ticket that Pierrot or Toei could be doing.

Trigger/Gainax was pretty hit or miss. But I like their ambitious projects.

I generally like the style shaft brings to a work even if they clearly cut corners to and have a reputation for failing to delever on schedule.

How do you determine "quality" of anime studio? It is actually very simple - ask a question, can Studio A make the same stuff Studio B does.

Which in the end filters out only two remaining studios:
1) KyoAni. KyoAni can do everything any other studio does if they wanted, and in better quality. No studio can make KyoAni anime even if they went all out and had all the budget and time.
2) Sunrise. Lazy cheap jews, but if want, can completely btfo every other studio in existence including KyoAni.

Production IG would be 3rd if modern production IG was not a total joke and commercial enterprise that lots all that made it special.

Bonus:
GoHands - none can emulate them, but most don't want to anyway.

As for "unique" studios that stand out due to own style i.e Shaft/Trigger etc. - its been proven many ties its very easy to emulate. Same as "best animation of any other studio" by hiring the freelancers they hired.

PA Works - Progressive Animation Works fits them very well, they have in fact advanced animation technique and tools and have very VERY good post processing/picture team, one of most advanced in industry making them a leader in digital threatment of anime and effects, achiving extreme high fidelity picture.

which brings us to UFOTABLE - meh animation, but once again superb post processing and decent CG department.

Colorido - is colorido and one and only effective entirely digital animation studio.

Toei has to be noted just because its fucking Toei - along with sunrise, they are bigger than rest of industry combined and while orienting on cheap products and children, capable of great things.

They did full metal panic and even though it's old, the animation has held up even to today's standards.

A1 is fucking dogshit. They ruin their adaptations.

Thats from a standpoint of consumer though, from standpoint of producers - anime studios are simple production pipelines. And some are far more reliable and effective than others:

A-1 and currently Diamedea lead outsourcing race and to go studios when you want cheap and somewhat ok adaptation (depending on budget).

JC Staff is core studio for manga/ln adaptation since ever. Anything they make, even in cheapest budget, would at least be solid.

Mappa/Cloverworks/Wit - current leaders in higher profile/budget anime, though in the end just outsourcing factories like the A-1/Diomedea, but more ambitious from get go, picking more high profile projects.

Madhouse USED to be the best studio to adapt unique manga/novel source material. Regardless of what made it special, they were able to make entirely different types of anime, transmitting the qualities of original. An only studio one would give some artist value. Used to. Not anymore (though ACCA shown they still are somewhat alive), and one still has to mention 90% of stuff they made was still irredimable trash. its just they made a LOT of stuff, resulting in a comparable lot of great shows too.

BrainBase - used to be best studio for non-harem LN adaptations, a good studio to work with story. But became fujoshi studio now, and spit from them Shuka, while good, barely does anything at.

One studio often forgotten, but that shoudnt be is Troyca. While their track record is not very great, they have a nice core to become a good studio.

Of the "new generation stars" the studios are

Kinema Citrus
Liden Filmes
White Fox

(disappointed and failed generation of "last" stars were Silverlink, Seven Arks and 8bit)

At this point, Kinema Citrus looking the best in terms of reputation and perspective. Liden Films growing steadily to one of main anime producers, albeit the quality does not match the top rank. And White Fox lost most of its gained reputation becoming just another generic anime studio.

3 Human zealods is not an animation studio. They are too small and mostly outsourcing factory aside from their "passion" projects, where its still mostly freelancers. The only thing they have is some name recognition due to Flip Flappers, but in reality they are lost among other studios people can't even remember name of with better track record. Somewhere on level of Layduce and Passione.

Of the new small ones, i`d not C-Station (which had huge success with yurucamp recently), just because its BeeTrain remainder - a somewhat unique studio i used to love

Also to note the WORST studios currently (not that Manglobe is dead and Gonzo rewived):

This. SHAFT have some really nice styles but they never deliver on them. Their works are often plagued by shit like placeholder CGI where art should be. To this day, I can never fathom why the bear was not cel-shaded when even the dog was. It's like Kotobuki where the characters have cel shading while the planes are just textured and shaded like a PS4/XBOne video game.

Maybe in their all CGI efforts, but even those have some pretty bad flaws at times. And certainly you can't be serious about their work with Trigger now.
