While I won't say there's nothing wrong with powerlevel shit, I also don't see it as being as bad as isekai, if not at least the worst offenders of isekai.
Because in the latter's case, there's much more of a sense of wish fulfillment, or exaltation of the ordinary, or even things that are seen as being pretty worthless, like being a NEET, or having a lot of video game knowledge. It often also indulges in the most banal of wish fulfillment as well, like going to a different world and gaining a harem of cute girls. And from there it sets up the scenario of "this NEET/useless person will actually save the world".

At least in powerlevel shit, there's usually some amount of training involved. And I've watched battle shounens since I was a kid, and I while I don't usually self-insert at all, I especially don't think I've ever been interested in self inserting into one of those.
