Hey Yea Forums I wanted to put down some of my thoughts on Rui’s relationship with Natsuo and this is what I came up with.
1 / 6 - the frame
When Rui fist fell in love with Natsuo it brought her agony though his half hearted responses to all her approaches. He was not just vague in his actions but blindly ignorant towards her.
After she finds out that Natsuo x Hina was a thing she was unable to handle it properly since from that point on she knew Natsuo was just not able to tell her that he was all about fucking her sister. She was just in their way.
She told him that she would hate him from that point on but couldn’t manage to get any distance to him and thanks to the plot-tool made in the US she is not even capable to be mad at him any more.
Hina and Natsuo break up and Rui is still not over him but finds herself in a position where she has the upper hand for once. Rui gets Natsuo back on track and alongside she receives finally some real approval from him. When Natuso hugs her thinking she is Hina, because she was wearing that wig, she experienced for the first time what she truly wants, to be loved the same way he loves Hina.
Rui is at this point actively trying to replace Hina – growing out her hair. She also tried to stop Natsuo from getting back together with Hina by holding back crucial knowledge
At one point she starts to date the plot-tool and Natsuo gets jealous. He literally started to be attracted to her when he found out that someone could steal his consolation prize.
Natuso x Rui is a never ending road of frustration and insecurity for Rui.
At any times there is some other girl that Natsuo is involved with to feed Rui's uncertainty... just take the pig as one example ... I don't even need to mention Hina’s large shadow to make that point. Nearly all their romantic moments hint to her being insecure.
2 / 6 – Obsession
What Rui truly wanted was him to write about her the same way he wrote about her sister. She sees this as some kind of milestone that would tell her that Natsuo’s feelings for her reached at the same level he has/had for Hina. He was never able to deliver that and when she asked him about it Natsuo blocks of and appears quit awkward.
Chapter 157 “feelings set in motion”, is when everything starts to fall into pieces. Hina and Rui always have a form of synchronously or duality to each other. In this chapter Hina started to date Tanabe (stalker-kun). Who was became obsessed with Hina to the point he wanted to stab her and take her future. Meanwhile in the next chapter Rui seems obsessed with her relationship with Natsuo.

3 / 6 - Norns Thread
The stabbing … wasn’t that fucking awesome for Rui? Her bf nearly died for his first love and at the same time her parents finally accepted their forbidden love.
She started to think about destiny because that was how their parents described Hina x Natuso. She asked the Chef about it and he basically tells her

Chef breaks the conversation down by asking her what happiness means to her
At this point her clinginess and emotional dependency towards Natsuo evolved into a clusterfuck of uncontrolled emotions and an obsession with her boyfriends fate and happiness.
So she decides to challenge destiny herself by accepting the job opportunity in New York. To go after her own dream. In a way she let Natsuo go, to find out if he would fly away or stay at her side. She wants to be more independent from her romance-life and to become less obsessed. Until this point she practically dedicated her life to Natsuo and now finally goes another way, not to go against her love but to become emotional more stable on the other hand Hina does dedicate her life to Natsuo.
4 / 6 - family trip - chapter 204.
I personally think this is one of the most important chapters for the future and the main reason for Rui to return to Japan and to later break up with Natuso
Rui called Hina to take Natuso out so he gets some inspiration for his writing. Note that Rui already knew that Natuso had problems with his writing without him telling her. Hina agrees and she includes their parents to come along. As soon as they arrived at this holiday home mom and dad instantly fuck off. Why?
Sasuga Kei was never the kind of writer who had any need for other people to disappear just for some h-scenes to happen. Kei uses other people (parents, friends, family ...) to build up tension, to give the reader the feeling of possible exposer. She enforces this by regularly using it as a plot device. My point is that Kei doesn’t isolate her protagonists. Of course there were moments when Natsuo x H or R were alone but never because of a reason that blunt.
This scene made me suspicious due to the fact how obviously idiotic the situation was presented,especially for dad. It feels so forced that in my opinion it is supposed to feel that way.
We know a lot of anime and manga where parents or literally every other human being has to disappear for two brainlets to have some privacy but this situation is different and does not fit with the authors regular style.
I think the only explanation for their behaviour is that they planned from the very beginning to leave Hina and Natsuo to themself. After Natsuo got knifed they did not only accepted their past relationship but they also want them to have a future at this point. They didn’t labelled it destiny for no reason … they meant it.
IF I am correct and mommy and daddy are all up for the wincest it would make sense for them to initiate Rui into it. Let her know about her siblings future and tell her that she should support them.
5 / 6 – Destiny
In fact I think that they send her a letter, pic related - chapter 207. The moment she reads the letter she looks like it is something really important but we never find out what it is. This happens at the same time when Serizawa kisses Natsuo after the play.
Chapters 214 - Rui comes back to Japan and she is tense as fuck from the very beginning. When she runs off in anger she stops, walks back to his apartment and then goes back and forth for quite a while… until Serizawa arrives. A fight erupts that ends with her finally running home.
Chapter 207 and 214 both imply that Serizawa is the antagonist to Rui x Natsuo but she is nothing but a distraction, a spark to ignite Rui's emotions and a useful strawman to Rui since she is not able to talk about the real issue conflicting her.
Both instances end with an encounter between Hina and Rui after the kiss in the theatre Rui calls Hina to ask what happened at the play and when Rui ran home after the fight she meets Hina at the house entrance and she asks Rui what happened since she is crying. Both encounter end with ether of them not saying anything. Hina doesn’t tell her about the kiss and Rui tells her simply to fuck off.
Rui’s real problem is Hina x Natsuo. From the moment Natsuo got stabbed, hearing her parents talking about their destiny and Hina staying by his side form that point on.
Ruis wanted to become less obsessed with Natsuo, to “stop testing him” and to have a peaceful mind at last. At the same time she was doubting herself, if she was ever meant to be with Natsuo or if she is just holding on to someone who sees her as a convenient security, Natsuo the heartbroken guy who goes after the fanatic fangirl who would never leave him.
6 / 6 Final resolution
Rui uses Serizawa as a strawman while talking to master and he doesn’t realise that. That is way he misunderstands the situation and later he questions himself if he gave her a bad advice. But he couldn’t have known better since he had no idea what was really going on.

She is obsessed with the thought of Natsuo and Hina having a divine bound and she felt like not being meant for Natsuo. To be in their way and that feeling was the reason she left. To become emotional stable she first restricted the amount of time they would see each other and after the stabbing left for New York.

Let me tell your a real story from my own experience. Two floors over my flat live a ~45yo alcoholic/drug addict. When Natsuo suffers another writers block, do you expect Rui to break up with him again? when they have the next fight, do you expect her to take harsher measures to hurt Natsuo just to make the relationship stronger? Or to even leave him when he needs someone to help him the most? Wouldn't a real couple work out the issues instead of just letting things 'mature' by themselves?
The old couple at the inn they stayed at said they worked through everything together. The physical abuse, the neglect, the debt, everything to be together.
To say Rui left for the relationship to mature by itself is like saying she is not willing to do work for the relationship, and she'd rather let it go and only come back when the situation has blown over so she can experience the good but not the bad of relationships. That would only justify her obsessive nature of "locking Natsuo up" and only going back to him when it suits her.
Rui left Natsuo because she knew they could not work as a couple, but also and primarily for his writers block. Writing is so important to Natsuo that writers block is something his partner needs to help him overcome, even if that help is just being there for him. That's all Rui had to do, especially if she wanted a long term relationship.To breakup when the most vital part of his identity has vanished and openly acknowledge she's not the one to help him or be there for him over something so important, is the same as saying 'i'm not the one for you'
