I haven't watched the toei version but AIR adaptations was probably one of the worst things KyoAni has put out. I really want them to remake it.

Technically KyoAni's art was more faithful to the source material.

All of Toei's Key adaptions miss the point and ruin the characters by having them act as if their personalities are fully developed from the start, except for Kanon which KyoAni did better anyway.

You should check it out. It was directed by Osamu Dezaki, a legend of the industry.

It still has it's issues, after all it's a film adaptation of a VN, but unlike the Kyoani TV series, it had the good sense to cut the fat and focus primarily on 3 characters. Also has a stellar soundtrack with several original pieces.

Faithfulness to the source material doesn't define the quality of an adaptation. In fact, taking into account that Air is a visual novel, it proved to make infinitely more sense to diverge from the source material.

Actually, it could very easily mean you adapted part of the source material to better accommodate the medium you're working with. I know it's probably difficult for your tiny brain to grasp, but works like these should always be judged on their merit. For that reason, the Air Movie blows the TV Series out of the water.
