In all honesty I agree - it would make for a refreshing change of pace. But there are problems, especially with tropes people expect in anime.

For one thing, they would have to commit pretty hard to limiting the speed of combatants, because after a certain point of increasing speed versus increasing defense the latter becomes essentially useless - and because speed generally mismatches with plate armor. It would have to be oriented strongly around either shields or characters being able to take blows repeatedly without significant damage. To achieve this in a supernatural setting would take serious dedication; a more realistic setting would be more feasible, but is even less likely to be made.

Generic anime fantasy realms are based on countless iterations of dragon quest, built upon tropes and clichés.
In these types of fantasy, knights are usually part of some order, which cannot be joined by an outsider MC. Knight is not a "class".

I'm eternally mad that the Goblin Slayer adaption was shit. Finally we get a protagonist who uses practical armor, practical weapons, and makes use of tools and the environment to win, rather than just blowing the enemy away with a bunch of gay magic wank. It just had to be an ugly CG shitshow of course.

Because there is no conceivable way you'll ever make it as a knight. A scrawny Japanese schoolboy outfighting a guy who spent ten years learning how to fight? It's hard to suspend disbelief. With magic, for which there are very little rules, I can believe a teenager can take on ten men.

But if you're one guy with a sword and shield, and you're fighting ten guys with swords and shields, you're fucked. The greatest swordsman in the world could fight maybe four of them before the other six punch swords through his spine.

Also, most isekai protagonists don't like to kill up close and personal i.e. They want to avoid the messy truth that people bleed a fucking lot when they get stabbed.

Well, speed isn't the same as agility. A tanky lad might not be dancing about but let him have some space to get a running start and he should be able to bulldoze through a small crowd with his shield up and spear couched like a lance.

Too often shield users in anime just use them to block straight on and nothing else, not even blocking at an angle to deflect the hit and have it slide off to the side. Where are the backhands that knock the weapon away and smoothly set up for a stab to the throat? Where are the shield edge punches that come out super fast and shake the fuck outta the other guy's helmet and skull?

There is not enough material to adapt, that is the only reason why we didnt get season 3 yet.

I am reminded of that idea for a series anons had years back where there's a world of magic with evil mages and MC is some classic knight guy who never speaks and travels around with a group of magical girls defeating the evil wizards. The finale was an enemy wizard who pulls out a sword and prepares to engage in honorable combat with MC finally only for magical girls to nuke him while his defense was finally down.

Either it's a really bad adaptation or this is the most overrated series yet. The snails pace plot progression. The protagonist is the least developed character and all the others have been left behind with the first arc. Basically a regular robed mage using a two handed sword, burning shit with flames, turning into a demon on the regular and eating enemies' hearts. I don't think any game came close to making a battlemage type character feel so great.

Strongmen get utterly shit on by people who actually know how to fight, because being strong is useful but martial arts and fighting knowledge is about how to dismantle the human body, outside in and inside out. A spear doesn't actually have any blind ranges, if you've actually watched them. There's a reason HEMA tends to ban spears or long polearms outright from normal sparring, therre's literally no good answer to the speed and range advantage they give to you.

It mostly has to do with the fact that there's nothing stopping a person from making a normal piece of clothing like a scarf or a bra hold armour enhancements. At high levels, the only type of AC that matters is Touch AC (because spells target Touch and so do martials worth the name). The 'normal' AC that heavy duty armour provides simply doesn't matter anymore, while its restrictions on you Dex bonus mean you will most likely have lower AC than the dodger.

No? The main way to deal with armour with a sword is either murder-stroking which is basically just using your sword as a staff, or halfswording, which is using it as a shorter bastardized spear.

That's not quite accurate. A shield gets less advantage as your armor is more capable of blocking opponents strikes, but in a fantasy world with creatures with greater strength than humans, shields would still have a place, even on a fully armored individual.

Most martial builds should not specialize in longswords, correct, but if you're a fighter or paladin who are focused on things other than doing attack damage, you might as well pick the longsword. Crit fisher scimitar builds, rock throwers, and area control defenders shouldn't touch the things, but not everyone has to play a crazy optimized build.

There's an Iai technique to strike with your sword in every position, after all that is what Iai was made for.
