I think Maruyama has been at a loss ever since he passed the WN. It really seems like whatever he had when he wrote the WN, isn't there anymore. So he has kinda written himself in a corner and now is afraid to go any direction, due to fan reaction (he got pretty big and he probably doesn't feel good about fan pressure, just like the Haruhi author).
