To be fair they didn't really die even then, they brought back "an Ittan Momen" around 10 eps later, because the canon was loose but also because yokai are common nouns, like kappas are found in every river. Would be funny if there were countless generic nekomusumes around Japan.

Actually, an awful lot of the old Neko Musume panty shots felt much less like fanservice and much more like a natural consequence of her skirt and constant action sequences. for example is more comic than anything else.

The ability to show innocent panties à la Miyazaki's Heidi really added a certain honest flair to the character. Now that they're constantly hidden, we get the feeling that panties are something to hide, and she feels much more sexual than she did before.

You don't seem to understand because the thing is, the panty shots shown above are just common stuff and are not meant to be "sexualized". Even in some anime, you could see people showering (I remember a particular case of a woman showering with her little baby, which is an everyday thing) or undressing casually. These are not supposed to be sexy scenes but the problem of "male gaze" became more and more prevalent in the minds of idiots and showing revealing things started to become taboo. Ironically, this leads to the thought "oh it's forbidden, so it becomes much more desirable".
A lot of "holier-than-thou" shitheads don't seem to understand that the more you try to repress something natural, the more it becomes insidious and pokes through the cracks, which is what made rise to the constant paranoia and fear that's taken root of "woke" women: the further they retract into their comfort zone, the more aggressive things that lie outside seem.
