I'm not usually one who screams about read the manga but this time... It's quite whole different story in the manga. In it Akira is very much alive and doesn't really do much since he tore this huge crater in neo-tokio. Tetsuo goes full Ainz, Akira slaps his shit and then boom we are just one organism or something. Been many years since I read it. Highly recommend.

Just because you don't like action doesn't mean you can denounce the great amounts of character development over the past few episodes and actual meaningful moments. All the psychic club kids and Scar members who were thought to be generic mooks in the first season have been shown to have made a turn-around and actually didn't fully job on their own with Teruki and Ritsu also showing their actual growth as characters based on how much their experiences with Mob has helped them. You can't seriously tell me this shit's directionless when every episode has had actual meaning such as episode 10 which showed the Body Improvement Club actually saving Mob and showing how even though they helped Mob build up his own confidence by being supportive friends, his consistent drive to keep going also inspired them just as much, or how like in episode 11 the return of Mogami wasn't a moment played for hype but actually capped off with Mogami showing his reflection from seeing Mob's way of dealing with things before parting while giving Mob a message of having to learn to be harsh on others in order to fully help those that he cares for.

OPM was the same way, past the initial chapters entire later parts of the webcomic are godawful, an endless Garou arc that so bad it killed the whole series, got to the point we didnt see Genos for over 2 fucking years, Murata is running circles to add Genos and other characters back into the comic redraw.

Overall this arc in mob feels like going through the numbers rather than natural evolution of the story, suddenly a boss shows up out of nowhere just so we can get some power level bullshit again.

You're being overcritical on an arc that hasn't even finished in the anime yet. In season 1 I'd give it to you if you gave this sort of criticism to scar's boss even though he was mostly played for gags while the other Scar members were given more character.
If that's a trope you hate then you sound like you'd actually enjoy generic shounen quite a bit, the fact that most of the mooks in the show actually turn around and help Mob in some way actually makes them feel more like characters than villains of the week. Even the boss that you're pre-emptively shitting on now actually has a significant impact on the story and fits as another great ideological struggle for Mob by being his toughest opponent mostly because of how set in his ways he is about his view of the world. If all you see is powers and not the characters behind them then you're not really enjoying this show to its fullest. ONE has never made powers be a focal point of Mob, that's why it's denounced so often by Mob himself, it's his way with people that makes him such a powerful character.

Again, I'd advise you to see this arc through to the end before judging it so harshly, it's one of the longer arcs because of how much it pieces together and how much it impacts the rest of the plot with the following arc. None of this was sudden either if you'd actually seen the first season, that's why Shou's re-introduction at episode 8 actually felt extremely threatening.

God the more I hear about the final fight the more excited I am to see the absolute field day Bones will have with it. Several eps this season have been movie-quality already and season 1's finale was really well done, so it's going to be amazing to see arguably the best fight in the manga completely adapted by Bones. Fuck I already know just seeing the final ep preview at the end of tomorrow's episode will be enough to get me over the moon.

If the show isn't edgy then don't pretend it is by using edge. It's every bit as cheap as killing people and then reviving them in other shounen: you've already exploited the shock value of murder, you've just copped out of the actual story consequences of killing a character people care about (because that happens to be the part that takes effort to write). You could just as easily have the villain actually do something bad but within the confines of your "low edge" world like kicking a puppy or something, but the reason that doesn't happen is because it's not edgy enough and you still have to write actual consequences and a villain with substance to their villainousness as well as how to deal with them (still the part that takes actual effort to write).

The writing is cheap, in exactly the same way Mogami's themes of societal cruelty being met with power of friendship is cheap. The manga is less of a lighthearted shounen for kids and more of an outright adult escapism fantasy where consequences and complex issues are dispelled in trivial ways. You can like it regardless, but at the end of the day you're basically saying you like isekai so don't act like you have any high ground against someone that criticizes the faults of the story.

What part of what the show pulled was edgy? It's a play on expectations that was set up perfectly by how SOL-oriented episode 8 was, that's why the change in tone towards the end was such an effective moment. Not only because it allowed us to get a glimpse of how Mob is like when he reaches the state of ???% which will be relevant for later but it also made perfect sense in-story for Shou to provoke Mob into reaching that state so he could actually stand a chance against the boss of Claw. How do you misunderstand something this basic? None of the show's messages are ham-fisted because you actually do get to see why the villains see things the way they do, it's what makes Mogami so interesting as a character because thanks to episode 5 not only did we get to meet a character who had similar circumstances to Mob but we also got to see what it'd be like if Mob went down the wrong path. Mogami's views were based on all his experiences but in the end of the day Mob had gone through enough to actually find realisation in all he has to be grateful for to stand up against Mogami. The upcoming fights with Serizawa and Shou's dad also demonstrate the series' strength in how the conflicts are mostly battles of ideology rather than battles of who can punch harder, and they're all great ways of demonstrating the developments of all the characters, something the show has done greatly so far. Just because you can't appreciate it doesn't mean it's as simple as you're making it out to be, you can dismiss it as an "isekai" or whatever that means as much as you want but there's a good reason why it's so well-loved and why it's garnering so much more popularity over the course of it's run. I'm glad Bones have been putting in so much work to fully realise ONE's already great series.

Not really. The animation for Mob absorbing his energy was very well done.

It was great but a big part of the episode was just talking with a lot of flashbacks though. A lot of shit was left out. Dimple Mob being the most obvious change but also small things like when Seizawa protects Reigen he's not hit twice but is umbrella breaks down after the first shit.

I would say it's comparable to episode 4 yes. Great animation when it's need but the majority of the scenes are just talking which you can't do too much with animation wise.

They did a great job at making the boss actually feel incredibly powerful, you can tell for certain he's the toughest opponent Mob has faced so far by how intimidating they made him.

Prior to 5 we didn't know. It was more like some of the animators leaked some information months before it even came out. Typically they mention their involvement a few hours before the episode airs.

Yeah, all the theatrical release episodes seem to be best viewed together. Episode 4 was build up, episode 5 was payoff. Episode 6 was buildup, episode 7 was payoff. You can say that the entire claw Arc is build up to the incredible payoff of the final fight next week. All of the episodes were top quality though.

And even if it's not, I think it's pretty clear already how unhealthy their relationship is and how manipulative the Boss is. There's also a big moment later between them that will hit hard. why do people pretend mob psycho's story has more depth than the average shounen? everything i've seen so far is pretty one-dimensional in that the "good and evil isn't black and white" trope is not anymore developed than any other battle shounen. there's a villain that's only "misguided" and not "pure evil" in every shounen jump series. one piece even has more depth because it has villains like hody who are products of global politics and not just victims of a "cruel society wahhhhh Dx." the whole CLAW organization is very flat and tired, and there's nothing parodic about it despite what diehard fans want people to believe. there's nothing particularly novel about mob psycho, it's just animated really well.

He wants to improve himself as a social person to create connections with other people by showing kindness and empathy to them. It's that change in focus and perspective that makes Mob so much better and thoughtful than your usual generic shounen.

The claw organization is flat and tired because it's supposed to be. The point is that it's a really badly thought out plan that makes no sense and is really unrealistic. The plan was "each of you has to beat 600 police officers" and nothing else.

what you're outlining is a fundamental problem with this series. you can't blend battle shounen shenanigans with an internal story like that an expect a consistent quality. you want a good version of protagonist development? 3-gatsu does this perfectly in a narrative frame typical of battle shounens, except completely disregards that framing and provides something really unique.

Like all of the complex web of relationships Mob has formed, Reigen's lack of self preservation and self esteem issues, Mob's entire growth which stems from the nurture of good influences that parallels all the antagonists, the subtle details in the animation which communicates a lot about a character or how they're feeling etc...all of this isn't spelled out to you, you must look past the surface level text and read between the lines

that's not actually true. you can read meaning into anything, but that doesn't mean it's there. you can objectively illustrate depth, as it has been done so many times successfully like said anime Evangelion. but there's no depth in mob's story, it's a very typical story. it's relatively deep because battle shounens tend to not be, but if you unwrap the package of the battle shounen, this is a fucking story that's been done a thousand times over. and the biggest part is, the packaging is the most important part. that's the reason why Evangelion projects the artifice of depth, or did you not understand that yourself?

Definitely felt like one of the weaker episodes this season but we were absolutely spoiled by 11 and presumably will be again next week.

Because it's among the things the series has been building up to. It was part of Mob's character from the start to understand and connect with other people. It truly feels genuine and earned because of that.
