Acqua Alta is both really nice and really annoying in Venice. It's great when the weather's nice so you can get some really pleasant pictures with the buildings reflected in the high water. But if it's grey, then you miss out on that. Also if you don't have boots, then you're forced to use the pontoons - which often get jammed up by tourists stopping for photos and the like.
But as a bonus, if you're in Venice when Acqua Alta is predicted then you're usually there in low season, which means fewer tourists and cheaper prices.

I really want to stay in the building that Himeya is based off of. Which is a hotel, but out of my budget. I think it would still be out of my budget even with the cheaper prices.

Well if it's any consolation, Acqua Alta doesn't last all day. Usually it peaks in the morning, and then dies down after a few hours. Pack some good wellington boots, and you've got free reign to explore without slowly trudging along the pontoons! But if you check the tide prediction site beforehand you can usually plan your trip to not be too disrupted by it.
And yeah, the Hotel Danieli is mega expensive. Most likely because it's slap bang on the Riva degli Schiavoni with a view onto the basin - as well as all that luxury stuff it's got going on! Would definitely be nice to stay there though. Especially as I think Akira is best girl.

I got the first volume if the Masterpiece edition the other day and have been slowly reading through it. Every time there's a page like this it just blows my mind with how good it looks. I'm looking forward to next chapter because it's the start of my favourite part of Aria and also has one of my favourite two page artworks.

I heard people say that the aria manga isn't as good as the anime, but so far I'm actually enjoying this more than the anime. Reading this whilst listening to the soundtrack is wonderful, having the chance to just pause in the moment and absorb the art and move at your own pace makes the experience so much better than the anime doing it for you.
Think I'm gonna have to buy the manga now if it's still available.

I don't like how they put the tokyopop logo on the cover. The JP version also has a real dustjacket and the Tokyopop doesn't. Tokyopop also has darker colors, almost too dark.

In my case, I'd had an interest in Venice and her history for a fair bit before watching Aria. So Aria presented an interesting take on Venice, which I guess I can sum up as 'Venice without all the problems affecting Venice right now'. It doesn't seem choked by tourists, the population seems healthy enough (it ain't a ghost town), buildings don't seem to be under constant renovation that takes forever because there's not enough money, and no godawful huge cruise ships spoiling the view and fucking up the lagoon ecosystem.
I was able to keep the two 'images' of Venice separate. Aria has the fittingly otherworldly, dreamlike Neo Venezia, while actual Venice has the beauty with a healthy dose of grit. An actual city with actual struggles. She has a magic of her own, really. If you do something like take your first visit in the height of summer, where there's like 1000 tourists per 1 actual Venetian, then I'd say you'll have a bad time. But go when it's a bit quieter, explore the maze of alleys like Akari does, see the beautiful palazzos and churches for yourself, and the strangeness of a city without a car in sight.Save for Piazzalle Roma

I’ve been there in August twice and I still found plenty of deserted side streets to enjoy. The most popular places are packed full of tourists all day but it’s a big city so there’s many more places to discover away from Piazza San Marco. One can always take the boat to the other islands that are less packed. In summer it’s hot as hell though, so if possible it’s a good idea to go on the off-season.

I'd say winter months but avoiding Carnevale, at least for a first trip. The city will be quieter (but not dead, there'll still be healthy numbers around the main attractions) and cheaper as it's not high season.

For what they had to work with and the fact it was given the mangakas nod of approval I think it really does deserve the praise it gets. It manages the ambience and pleasantness of the manga even if the artwork is lacking (which is not the fault of the show as budgets have to be considered) that is one superficial thing to nitpick at.
