Every flaw he has could be eventually be overcome in a satisfying way if the staff didn't consist of an automatic random plot point generator, but instead we watch a character squander every chance he has to be likeable. We saw it was possible for male/female pairs to swap, as with Mitsuru and 02, but female/female wasn't (Ikuno/Ichigo). But those two incidents were all we had to see the possibility of swapping fleshed out. Maybe all the boys get sick so somehow the doc makes some kind of hack that can make one of the girls simulate a boy for a set time period and have the girls pilot. I think it would also lend itself well to fanservice, and they have some kind of ace in the sleeve in case they ever need to do that kind of thing again.
