I don't think she ever really cared about Hikaru. The only reason they even had any association at all is because they were trapped together that one time and she wanted to experience her first kiss before she died. Aside from that, their relationship was entirely one sided. To be fair, even though Min May is whore, Hikaru is a piece of shit too. Frankly, he doesn't deserve Misa. She was the real victim in all this.

Minmay only saw Hikaru as a friend though. Only when she went through a depression, she started having "feelings" for him and were mostly because she was confused and lonely and Hikaru being a two timing scumbag and rightfully treated as one (although easily forgiven, Misa could have done so much better than this asshole) took advantage of a 18 years old because he wanted to live his fantasy. When he realized she WOULD drop him for her music eventually and noticed Misa was available, he jumped ship. He even said in the end he did it because Minmay was out his league.Why didn't Misa kicked him in the balls after that, it beats me.

Minmay was a young teenager who was manipulated by two older guys who wanted to have a relationship with her. Her cousin first, who was abusive, controlling alcoholic and took advantage she made him her manager because he seemed supportive when her parents weren't. Then Hikaru, her so-called best friend, who just nursed her when she was emotionally vulnerable 18 years old after coming out an abusive relationship, all because he had a torch with her.
Seriously, Minmay may be ditzy, but on the height of having her fucking family killed on Earth, she still went and sang on stage to help the war. People whine about "waah why didn't she comfort Hikaru about Roy" when Hikaru didn't even comfort her about her parents, and she took that far more mature than Hikaru. She grew up into such a classy woman as we saw in Flash back. Who we know does her best to help Macross world as both running projects and leading peace embassies with the Zents before she went MIA (and she was apparently contacted in Delta).
I agree Misa is amazing, but Minmay was an obvious victim here and the guys were both fucking scum. Did you forget Misa wanted Kaifun's dick badly for half of the series too? Hikaru was the lesser evil, but really he's not much of a catch either.
