This was a fun bit of fan service, it was nice seeing everyone grown up and getting some Conan x Ran age gap action (which I wish would happen while he's still small).

If they're making OVAs that are this strange, then that explains the existence of the live action dramas a little more. They feel kind of like a bizarre alternate universe where Shinichi never became Conan.

I phrased it wrong, iirc they dont happen upon the real world, they're just in it and I think they treat it like normal as if the real surroundings are the same as when they're in the animated setting of the anime. They just kinda leave or something at the end because the kids overhear the making of and think someone is plotting to murder Conan. He tells them its fine and that they're not criminals.

There's a few OVAs that are side stories to what happens in the anime/manga like what the kids did during the London arc and there was one with Kaito. There's a couple with kid actually. They're good and again, not all are weird can't-happen stuff.

Anyone know what this site used to be like? I've been wanting to get the old reruns of 118 and mist goblin and they seem to be the only providers, there's a dead torrent which managed to download a tiny piece of 118 which is where I got this and the image of Heiji with a photo of Kazuha behind him (from its opening narration). Of course the rerun isnt in remastered quality but the new introductions are worth trying to find these for.

I should correct myself, its not a sub, they're raw. Heiji seems to be doing a "that time we solved a case" recap. Seems I was able to download more of the introduction than I thought though. It's cute. I'll see if I can make a webm without the undownloaded pieces corrupting the video. I don't think these old rerun animations have been uploaded anywhere, I have seen the remastered ones around, like the Detective Heiji joke.

I won't go on about this longer but the low quality rerun has better colors than the raw DVD does. I did notice that the raw DVDs have varying contrast and brightness in every episode (evident with OPs and EDs being too dark or kinda bluer between episodes). I just thought it was interesting since this episode has yet to get a remaster.

It's astonishing that people think this would be a good story decision.

I'm pretty sure they did, but they cut away quickly. It would be difficult to adapt the bath shots from the manga because it's harder to get away with steam covering stuff up in anime. Either they make it too dense and it looks bad, or they don't make it dense enough, and people are able to lower the brightness and see things they shouldn't. And if the steam is moving, making sure it covers everything continuously can be more difficult. It's no surprise they just opt for arm and shoulder and feet closeups instead. It's a decent compromise.

There are a bunch of raw remasters I want to track down but all of the seeds are dead. We really need some way to store these old broadcast-only releases for posterity if the powers that be aren't going to release them on BD.

The way around that is to just draw the outlines over the steam like what they did in the old episodes with some transparent things or to not color in the skin details like nipple. At the very least stop cutting fanservice that doesn't have that problem.

Fuck I need to organize, this took 6 minutes to find because I have Conan stuff in multiple folders. So many Conan folders. But in the end, it was just in my Downloads.

Which remasters? I did the heavy lifting on some and if anything I can toss them on Mega or Google Drive for you. The torrents for some I have were dead so I had to go to some uloz(dot)to site with download speed restrictions just to find them. Took ages to get the Kidnapped Artist parts.

I'd gladly give it my all to share what I managed through various sources and to keep searching for whats missing. Maybe if someone from a long time ago pops in and has the old reruns they could share them too. Googling like I did for the remasters in dead torrents aren't really solving the rerun files problem unfortunately.

Some missing remasters were found by changing the naming scheme, some catalog the remasters as the most recent episode number before the remaster aired with a decimal after it. Like 988.5 or .3 and .6 for two parters iirc. It was a nice Christmas when I discovered I could find some this way. I even managed to find the Black Impact remasters.

Personally I like the idea of Ai just remaining single and becoming Shinichi's detective partner somewhere down the line. Replacing Agasa and making inventions for him and stuff, and helping him on cases.

This has to be the endgame, because I can't see much else for her. Hell she doesn't even have much of a reason to turn back into an adult. She'd just be abandoning Ayumi because the deception reveal would be too twisted.

The ending of the last case was highly underwhelming.

I also have the full Moonlight Sonata rerun (it also has a special opening, its Aoyama saying some stuff and some special effect montages). I forgot to mention it because [Fabrebatalla18] has it in their remasters torrent and its classified as a remaster in the file though its just a basic rerun from before they aired remasters. I wonder if they recorded this all the way back in 2003 or if they got it from somewhere.

It has no subs but unlike the Heiji 118 introduction I'm surprised no one has translated it because it has Aoyama saying something, presumably about the case.

It also seems to have better lighting than the raw DVD. You can see Narumi's face at the end unlike in the other copies I've had.

I wish there were recordings of old Conan episodes as they aired in Japan, they not only have a charm to them just on that merit but when those episodes dont have remasters, they're the next best thing. Even the OPs and EDs look better apparently. Though this could just be a rerun advantage that the premieres didn't have, but at this point I can't tell.

The karaoke box murder case is one of my favorite episodes from that season. The way Shinichi takes command in the second half of the episode is spell-binding, Kappei's performance is exquisite there.

I cant pick favorites but what comes to mind when I think funny is the scene in Night Baron's manga where Kogoro drunkingly puts his head between Ran's breasts and she whops him. There was one with a lot of awkward humor in it (like Conan seeing Ran nude kind of awkward) but I can't remember what it was if it was canon.

Do you guys wish the story had stayed set back in 1994/1996 or are you fine with the changes made to retcon it to the present year?

I wish Gosho had kept the story based around the time it began. For one thing, a lot of cases would be completely different because of the technology changes and wouldn't make sense in the present time. But another thing personally is that I really like the early 90s flavor to the character designs and general aesthetic. If the series had kept that, it would really stand out today. But perhaps the new generation of viewers wouldn't care for it.

Even Shinichi's haircut is totally a late 80s/early 90s style. I think it's cool.

I guess them using smartphones and drones aren't too overbearing so you can kinda just pretend since technically time hasn't moved but a few months.

I don't think that would be a problem if they were to establish the setting as being in the mid-90s. Kids would figure out eventually that the web hasn't been widely used for that long. Plus it would have created consistency with all of the early cases that would have been changed if the internet had been available.

It's a lot of fun. That era is really underrated aesthetically. Rewatching the early Conan seasons, I miss that style a lot.
Keeping those technological limitations would have also provided their own interesting challenges to solving cases and to the characters themselves. Like the separation between Shinichi and Ran was a lot more poignant when they couldn't just text or email each other.

Forgot the credits problem. I guess TMS didn't give Funi the raw credits for each episode version and Funi was too lazy to splice the clips in from the episode itself like they apparently do with the opening previews and next Conan previews.

The first ED starting with the first episode before Conan even starts hanging out with the kids shows the Ayumi Kidnapping scenes which spoils Conan taking out the guy at the end (luckily not that they weren't murderers and the head was fake)

The second ED shows scenes from the Sunfish murder but only shows the guy who died. It also shows the photo burning scene at the start but it happens first thing in the episode anyway which turns the episode less into a who did it and more into a how did they do it.

The third ED spoils the woman being the culprit in the stalker case. Fourth one spoils the teacher villa murder one too. The fifth shows scenes from the episode where Ayumi is hit by a car but doesn't spoil anything.

The most obvious solution would have been, at the very least, to use the first episode those credits were used in, so it doesn't show scenes from an episode you havent gotten to yet. Alternatively, do your damn job and dont reuse credits when they're the recap kind. At least for the most part they got the opening previews right.

I'm rewatching the anime from the beginning, currently on season two and there are a couple episodes so far where he gets really mad.
One is Akaoni fire festival, webm related. Here he's just mad because the suspect won't admit to his crime and just assaulted him. Conan loses his temper out of frustration and ruffled ego.
Then there's mountain lodge bandaged man murder case which you mentioned. I really like this one. For whatever reason the site kept jacking up the filesize when I gave it more pixel size. It's weird since the original file, which did apparently have audio, wasn't even quite 2mb itself, and yet just selecting the audio mute option still saw the size go up.

Have you tried WebMConverter (gitgud.io/nixx/WebMConverter)? It has a lot of options for optimizing for filesize and quality. You can keep the subtitle track on too.

Guess I could try, but I'm just not the most tech literate with these things. And the original actually didn't have subtitles, not even Japanese ones. Guess whoever made the original file didn't care about including such things.

I kind of do. It feels like a strange alternate universe but I enjoy some of it. The TV series feels more like the anime/manga than the specials except with more ecchi stuff. Junpei Mizobata is way better as Shinichi than Oguri Shun, who didn't even try to act anything like him.

I know most of them aren't chinese at least. Only one time did I react to an asian seeming a bit "off" and that was how the boyfriend in the Uzumaki movie spoke japanese. Not really Conan related though.

I don't know of any Chinese live action adaptation of Conan, the ones I know are all Japanese productions with Japanese actors.

Since mazes 迷路・迷宮 are associated with mystery, they're a motif that come up again and again in DC, especially in the OP/ED lyrics. Back to movie titles. "Magician of the Silver Sky" in Japanese is "Magician of the Silver Wings" (a poetic word for "airplane"). For "Strategy Above the Depths," "depths" is written with "horizon" in Japanese, and "strategy" with kanji that's usually translated as "conspiracy" or to describe an evil plot, but has "strategy" written on top of it in katakana, so carries shades of both meanings. "Jolly Roger in the Deep Azure"'s Japanese title is "The Azure Coffin" with "Jolly Roger" in katakana over "coffin".

For some reason, the movies that have come out this decade have English titles much closer to their literal Japanese meanings than previous ones.

Aside from how sad Ran seems it always seemed weird to me that he'd ever be that... emotion when talking to her on the payphone. It was always a bittersweet touching moment when he did it. I don't think he ever called her up and said "Hey Ran you'll never guess how this guy died and how I solved his murder", it was usually a personal moment where he referred to "a/the" case when she wondered where he was.

That said, has he been telling her there's cases that he keeps getting in or is it one big case? What Ran says in the Desperate Revival scene at the restaurant implies she at least thought it was one case. The dub had him say it was one big one but it might be its own script change.

Maybe whoever drew the storyboards for that OP had the idea Conan was trying to comfort Ran in a bout of insecurity by projecting his usual unbreakable confidence, like "oi oi, who do you think I am?" but the facial expression just manages to be comical.

I think he's been talking about one big case all along, like in this scene. It isn't just the dub because he makes the distinction in Japanese too.
