The first thing is breaking the fake identities and revealing that they go to the same school and in fact knew each other before. Ryoken kind of opened the box when he reveled his real name to Emma and Aoi, in my opinion, Kusanagi vs Yusaku was the perfect chance for them to reveal Yusaku's identity as well. Maybe they (the writers) tied themselves when they stated that Yusaku was a criminal searched by SOL, that made it almost impossible for Yusaku to ever use his deck in real life.
Yusaku has a top notch desing and I'd be a shame if they wasted it only because the writers were clumsy enough to make it plot impossible for him to do so.

That's not true and doesn't answer anything. He didn't do anything for 50 episodes and was treated as fodder for Lightning without interacting with Aoi once. It actually seems like he isn't developing as a character himself at all. Feels like he's just stalled out and is used for development of other characters. Appears sort of hollow is all.

Talking seriously he did show a bit more about his character, advanced the plot by revealing that Lighting is hiding something, and ultimately had a nice gimmicky duel where he looked far better than most other side characters, by turning the Extra link all the way around.

I disagree, they revealed basically nothing about him, used him to rant about lightning, and his gimmick deck is still bad.

For a man that's deadset on destroying the Ignis along with Revolver, he did feel something when Earth died, Which shows a disconnect between his own thoughts and his strong loyalty to Revolver, He also tells us a bit about himself, of how he knows he isn't special or really strong, but that he will do whatever he possibly can for Revolver.
And he once again shows his ability to upset his opponents and break them with words, to the point where he did it with an AI.
Maybe you're blind to that sort of thing, and in a show as simple as VRAINS, that should be worrying for you.

Back in S1 mostly all characters were great bar the fatso kid. We had Obelisk Force and stuff, and then instead got some random fodder from Academia instead of Osiris/Ra Forces.

I think the biggest problem in the show is duel monsters aren't a big part of it.
Nobody is close to their monsters.
Not even the main character.
Only specter and earth but it's to represent something else.

Well, that's part of the personality of the characters as well, Aoi and Go for example are entertainers and their monsters are just a tool to get fame to them, Emma and punished Go as well as the villains use them to face whomever oposes their plans and the lost incident children didn't even want to see the cardgame again after having been tortured for six months and forced to play or die.
