Well he's just about perfect so it's understandable. Likewise if you had said Toki instead of Rei.

I kind of wish Airi had toughened up after that and joined them. She's my favorite HnK girl and was somehow more useful in a fight than supposed fighter Mamiya considering she actually did kill a few people.

Shu is underrated, everyone just praises Toki instead. Shu & his son sacrificed everything so that Ken could go and do what he needed to do.

Shu's definitely the best part of the Souther arc but the Souther arc kind of sucks and I fucking hate Souther so whatever.

Souther arc was alright, but the Souther gag anime was great.

Rei's Gaiden is so weird and shit. He was a great character though.

I don't think he's interesting and I find the entire "Ken mourns for him because he closed himself off to love after killing his adopted father" thing to ring hollow. A lot of the villains have at least some quality that makes them a tad sympathetic or redeemable but Souther was using child slaves to build a pyramid, explicitly went after kids and would intentionally waste giant feasts just to fuck with children even more.

He's too much of an unrepentant asshole much like I can never buy Juda's "tragedy" considering he kept a giant harem of rape slaves.

I literally only like Souther because of his voice.

I think he was an arsehole as well and his ending didn't really forgive him in my eyes, but he was a great viillain overall. Particularly in a series where villains often had good motivesfor their actions.

Also without Souther we wouldn't have Geese Howard.

Well, a couple of things come to mind.

By far the dumbest whore in the entire HnK universe. She could have fucked his brains out those last 3 days, he was still mobile and capable. Dude even tells her a dozen times he thinks women are for making babies, that she should be a mom and that he wants her. Literally makes me wanna throw her out of the window.

I dunno, I thought most major villains in Fist of the North STar were like that, where they did a lot of abominable things, but Ken still managed to feel some sort of sympathy for them

I always thought Mamiya sucked, mostly because she was presented as a somewhat formidable warrior in the post-Apocalyptic world, but seemed to spend most of her time needing to get rescued

Like I said fucking Airi of all people was more effective at actually dealing with bad guys than Mamiya. She shot and killed a couple of Ken-Oh's mooks with a crossbow which is more than Mamiya ever did.

Not only that but when Airi and Mamiya hostages Airi was the first to act and show bravery, she tried to bite her tongue off to force Rei and Ken to fight back. Mamiya then stared at her like a retard and immediately started imitating her by throwing herself autistically at a spear.
The point of HnK was that you don't need to be a warrior and know how to fight to show vigor and bravery, this was demonstrated so many times with women and children. Mamiya was a complete try hard and ineffective 90% of the time.

No idea, I've never read Rei Gaiden and I don't remember it ever coming up in the original series.

It's not in the Rei Gaiden, I didn't read a single of those shitty Gaidens. They're literal spinoffs and have nothing to do with the Buronson story.
If I remember correctly Jagi busted into the house on her wedding day and killed mom, dad and the fiancee.
