Why did this became rumiko takahashi's most famous work ?

why did this became rumiko takahashi's most famous work ?

usually it's a mangaka's first work that is the most sucessful, ranma is her 3rd work after invader lum and maison ikkoku

But InuYasha is her most famous work.

not really, it was more of a fad.

A 'fad' for 3 decades and counting

Pretty sure InuYasha is her most famous internationally, it's certainly the only one I've ever encountered in normie life. But with such an old career it's obvious that the perspectives on her work are very different from Japan than to everyone else since her earliest stuff wasn't translated as it was being published but her later stuff was.

Technically, Invader Lum actually did much better than Ranma 1/2. Ranma is better known outside of Japan because it got full translated releases, whereas the attempts to translate Invader Lum fell apart very quickly due to the heavy Japanese-dependent gags and quirks.

I haven't watched lum, inuyashu or maison ikkou but i have to say you have to grow up with ranma or at least watch it at a very young age to fully enjoy it.

Its not particularly great but for a lot of people it was their first introduction to anime or when they realized the cartoons they were watching were from japan, like me. So its no wonder its famous.

Outside of Japan it is. Inside Japan it’s Lum.

Maison Ikkoku was, ironically, too rooted in realism for its own good, which made its quirky characters and plots come off as a bunch of jerks being idiots.

Urusei Yatsura went too far the other way, resulting in what was basically the Japanese equivalent of a Looney Tunes show, with completely unsympathetic main characters.

Ranma 1/2 is where she hit the sweet spot, creating characters who were quirky enough to be funny, yet also sympathetic enough we want to root for them, with a nice mixture of action and comedy that doesn't over-emphasize either side too much.
