Has Yea Forums watched any pre-2000 recently? I just finished watching Birdy the Mighty OVAs and loved it. She's so awesome. Wish there was a modern equivalent.
Anyway, poast some pre-2K anime!

exceptional taste my man
I'm almost done with Akazukin Chacha, I feel like I'm going to miss it a lot.

she's perfection! better looking than any new moe girls.
I finished Gunbuster
What did you think?
Pretty cool
Man they don't make women like that anymore...
>Gunbuster
everything from Gainax is top-tier.
Finished Zeta, it was really good, especially near the end. Moving on to ZZ.
I'm 13 episodes into Maison Ikkoku and sort of settling into its characters being mostly unlikable shitheads and enjoying it now.
watched 1 ova. meh. It reminded me of Devilman OVAs and Parasyte, but a cute girl instead of some monster superpower.
this looks fun, but Im too damn lazy to watch a so damn long anime. Is it episodic, or it has a progress? does it have filler? wish the manga was completely scanlated.
fine anime . would be better if it wasnt that compressed, should have been 10 OVAs instead. the romance appeared out of nowhere.
It's mostly monster of the week with only a handful of episodes that meaningfully progress the story that are spaced out once every 15ish episodes.
It's really fun, great character interactions all around.
I finished Joe the second half of Joe part one. Going to take a break and watch Sora yori mo Tōi Basho then Onisama e...Before I start Joe part 2.
A really nice rip of Mach Go Go Go showed up on nyaa last week. Always wanted to watch that version of the show
What rip is that?
Maison Ikkoku is great. I'd recommend reading it in parallel, or maybe when you finish. The anime is good and the manga is great. Might read it again with the anime OST playing.
Is this anime only? Because I've been reading this manga and it's underrated as hell. It also has anime based on it.
I was so hyped that Bandai remembered that Dai exists for Jump Force, but then game turned out to be fucking shit. My boi deserves better resurgence.
The best way I can describe it is imagine if Dragon Ball was at the level of quality somewhere between 23rd Tenkaichi Budokai and Saiyan arc. It seamlessly blends action, comedy and drama and deals with absolutely insane shit (like similar to Dragon Ball Dai is half-human with great innate power, but what makes Dai's manga better is that his supporting cast isn't rendered useless overtime, all characters who stick around get a really good moment to shine, especially Pop). It's like, it's just every good aspect of Dragon Ball in some points done better than Toriyama, you can't escape comparisons to Dragon Ball, but it is in no way just shallow copy.
I just watched an episode of Gundam 79 where they run out of supplies in the middle of a fight, and all I could think was... how come Star Trek: Voyager never did anything cool like that with their limited supplies? It's not fair.
I thought it was cool too. I really disliked that even within Gundam 79 and especially in later parts Tomino just stopped caring about these things. And I have no fucking clue why lack of salt became such a meme, lack of any basic ingredients like this are always fatal on a ship in the middle of enemy territory.
>And I have no fucking clue why lack of salt became such a meme
The only thing I thought was silly about it was Amuro and Fraw Bow's reaction. The adults were worried about morale, which makes sense, but the kids thought you'd die without seasoning.
Watched the last Tezuka Art Porn movie. There were a lot of really great cuts of experimental animation in it that I loved as well as more of those really crazy audio/visual metaphorical sex scenes that were present in all three films.
I'd still say Belladonna was my favorite. Belladonna > Cleopatra > Tezuka's version of Aladdin.
I'm watching Zambot 3. Not really that much of a fan of super robot stuff but I want to watch some older mecha series since I watched a lot of Gundam stuff recently. Doesn't seem like there are any good copies of it though. All I could find (at least with subtitles) was the entire series on Youtube.
I also just finished reading 2001 ya Monogatari, which was kind of cool and had some interesting short stories in it. But I wasn't a fan of the art and some of the stories fell flat for me.
I watched the Patlabot OVA a few days ago with some friends who are getting into some of Oshii's old stuff. Its was nice. Nothing wrong with an episodic SoL with adult characters. I wasn't expecting how little presence the mechs had though. And I wouldn't say I was dissapointed by it but is certainly didn't seem to be as gripping as it's critical acclaim would typically suggest.
The OVA is usually spoken as if it were just supplementary material to watche before the two movies though, so I expect the movies themselves are what the series is remembered for.
>as it's critical acclaim
Obsessed manchildren are not actual critics. The OVA has no critical acclaim so to speak of.
Oh no, you can absolutely die due to lack of salt, especially in the fucking warzone. Look up Hyponatremia, the way as a dilettante I understand it is that if you sweat a lot, which in the warzone you do, your body loses salt through sweat and you need to replace it.
I meant the series itself and as I said I would assume that comes from the movies more than anything.
It doesn't either. The only entry that received critical acclaim is Patlabor2 for its excessive effects animation and stellar visual directing. The rest of the franchise (2 OVAs, 2 more movies, a 50 episode TV show) is essentially irrelevant. Doesn't mean that most of those aren't good of course, bar the TV show. At least 50% of that is complete horse shit with terrible formulaic and substandard writing.
Watched Detatoko Princess and was a fun little fantasy/comedy ova. And almost done with Gulliver Boy, only 2 ep left. I never watched it when it aired in my country, overall is a good show, had the potential to better tho.
Also started Haunted Junction, GTO and Gundam: The 08th MS Team. I liked all 3 of them.
As of now I only plan on watching the two other movies that Oshii directed, so I'll look forward to watching them in that case.
It's not presented as "we're out of salt and literally all of the rations we have have no sodium in them for some reason oh god we're going to die." It's presented as "we're out of salt, people are going to be upset."
>everything from Gainax is top-tier.
saying that when Diebuster exist
Leave it to the ESL to have shit taste. There are plenty of bad Gainax anime, you swung and missed.
Diebuster was great. Just as good as Gunbuster IMO.
I started watching Touch to get caught up for when Mix airs, and i just can't stop. The 2nd OP & ED are so fucking good
Fucking birdy ova attentionwhores.
Maam is so hot. One of my first 2d faps. And Hyunkel always has the coolest armors.
Early Days + the first two movies are the only standout parts of the franchise anyway. But while the TV show is shit, it still has some very good episodes that are almost all shoved into the first half. Third movie you should only watch if you like the second one and New Files is probably worth it if you like Early Days.
Luu>>>Birdy
New Files is a straight continuation of the TV series, watching it without the TV series would be really stupid.
What is stupid is giving a rats ass about continuity of "story" in a franchise that is episodic. The second half of the TV is downright terrible and the SSS and Black Labor storylines are bar none the lowpoint of the entire franchise. Please stop projecting your mental disability as a completionist retard onto other people.
That would be sensible if New Files were all episodic, but it's not. Why does Patlabor make you so angry?
I don't know how you could stand it, I could barely get through the first episode of Diebuster after marathoning Gunbuster.
The quality of the animation and robot design just took a stark drop compared to Gunbuster. That and the pink haired girl randomly tearing her shirt in a callback to the climax of Gunbuster felt offputting.
It might be a good show in it's own right but watching that right after the original just ruined it for me. I havent felt so disappointed since watching Macross Delta after watching Plus, Frontier, and DYRL.
But unlike the TV show it doesn't sport 1 well animated sequence per 5 episodes.
>Why does Patlabor make you so angry?
Are you illiterate or too stupid to follow conversations? I quite literally stated that I like all Patlabor entries bar the second half of the TV show, yet I still wouldn't recommend WXIII, New Files or the TV show to anyone because they simply aren't good. They are what you watch if you've already developed a liking for the cast.
If you're put off by a reference that small, how in the holy hell did you make it through Gunbuster's literal copy and paste of Ace wo Nerae?
akira it sucked
Your opinions aren't the reason I asked why Patlabor makes you angry, you posting angrily is why I asked why Patlabor makes you angry. Or is being belligerent just your nature?
watch labyrinth of flames
>Ace wo Nerae
Probably because I've never heard of it, and judging how the summaries says it's a girls tennis story I can't see any reason why i would have.
Also the reference was really just the straw that broke the camel's back for me with Diebuster, I'm assuming if I didn't watch it right after Gunbuster I wouldn't have noticed the sharp drop in quality or w/e
Gunbuster is pretty much a direct rip of Ace wo Nerae's plot, just adjusted to being about robots and aliens.
Also, watch Ace wo Nerae. It's pretty great.
>Gunbuster is pretty much a direct rip of Ace wo Nerae's plot
I find that really hard to believe but i'll check it out.
>watching that right after the original just ruined it for me
The good thing about Diebuster is that it doesn't try to copy the 80's aesthetic of Gunbuster since it could only fall flat. It took what made Gunbuster so great and translated it into the early 2000s aesthetic. That's a bit of a culture shock when you watch them in quick succession since they're both products of their time.
>It might be a good show in it's own right but watching that right after the original just ruined it for me.
It's not supposed to be treated as a sequel. They are alike in name only, otherwise they are essentially different shows. This always seems to be the biggest complaint most people have about Diebuster, but why would you expect two shows made decades apart by completely different people to be the same?
>It's not supposed to be treated as a sequel.
Admittedly from the wikipedia but...
>Diebuster, also known as Aim for the Top 2! (トップをねらえ 2! Toppu o Nerae Tsū!) and Gunbuster 2, is a six-episode original video animation series directed by Kazuya Tsurumaki, written by Yōji Enokido and animated by Gainax. It was created to commemorate the studio's 20th anniversary in 2004, and it is a sequel to their 1988 OVA Gunbuster.

I’m in about the middle of Rose of Versaille. holy shit the queen is pissing me off with every scene she’s in. no character development, no scenes of her and the king since they were wedded, she lets people walk all over her. The rosalie arc is decent but I’m waiting for the revolution to start. Oscar x Rosalie is great.
I really only care about oscar at this point. her episode where she left paris to go to her home estate was fantastic.
forgot pic. I love these stills, i really didn’t expect them but they’re gorgeous.
>holy shit the queen is pissing me off with every scene she’s in
That's what she's supposed to do.
>The rosalie arc is decent
Enjoy it because Rosalie is pretty much a character exclusive to the anime, she gets dropped really fast in the manga and most of its development with Oscar is anime only stuff.
>I love these stills,
That's Dezaki for ya
She pissed off the French pretty bad too
I just wish the queen had some variety in her scenes. it’s literally the same shit in every episode.
I keep telling myself I'll watch Iria Zeiram and Key the Metal Idol but I never get around to it.
Not that user you replied to. It is a sequel, but the connection is very lose and only really there in the world building and general themes of HARD WORK and GUTS. The execution is very different. The tone and aesthetic of the two shows differ wildly, with Gunbuster being a typical 80's show focusing more on the sci in sci-fi and being generally more serious, while Diebuster is absolutely a typical early 2000s show with much more wacky designs and shenanigans. The issue is that many people read "it's a sequel" and expect similarities in tone and narrative while not considering that the two are well over a decade apart. They're products of their respective times and anime changed a lot over the course of 15 years.
Thoughts?
art like that doesn't exist in "all computer generated" anime world.
I'm not him, but he's right. Ace wo Nerae is one of Anno's favorite shows and he literally named Gunbuster after it. All of the character drama is exactly the same, they just replaced tennis with using mechs to fight space aliens.
It's possible just take ton of effort.
well, yeah, but that's why no one does it.
if would take much less effort to do it the old way with acrylic paints and cellulose.
It's time consuming.
Same reason of why anime faces in general got more simple. You can do pretty much everything with digital. Just look more clean due resolution.
Yuasa's art direction is similar but it's much more jagged and obtuse
I'm making my way through all of Lupin III. I'm 120 episodes deep into Part II. It's such a watchable fun show. You can tell a lot of people worked on it due to how different each episode can be. You can get fairly down to earth stories about assassins or you can get cartoon logic popcorn powered space rockets.
Just watched this gem. Haven't seen the movie it's a prequel of, but this was still great.
anyone else a fan?
thoughts on Sukeban Deka?
youtu.be
Halfway through Yawara and I think I'm going to drop it. Started off great but the whole thing went in a shitty direction and she became an annoying whiny mary sue. All the other characters are so one dimensional as well.
Also adding my shit opinion to the thread. Diebuster, zeta and outlaw star suck. Patlabor is good.
Severe lack of sailor moon in this thread, everybody post their favourite sailors
Time to go watch these.
And to finish Decode.
Watched Patlabor movie 2 recently. Pure kino
I hope you join the right side of history in recognizing that Decode is superior in every way except humor
youtube.com
the OST is incredible
I got tired of Urusei Yatsura, so decided to watch some titles released in my year of birth, inspired by that user a couple of threads ago. Could've been better.
>Maroko
Felt more like a play than an actual movie, which was interesting, since I didn't get much out of it anyway. I read it's a summary movie, so I guess I should have watched the original OVAs in advance. The character designs creeped me out a bit, but the voice acting and musical sequences made up for it.
>Heavy
The most memorable thing about it is that it's hard to find. I know it couldn't have adapted all six volumes of the manga, but it didn't even have a proper ending.
>Kaze no na wa Amnesia
Interesting premise, but manages to feel way too long and disjointed.
>Demon Beast Invasion
The fourth OVA (if I remember correctly) had probably the most budget and it showed. The rest was just typical demon rape hentai. I wish I hadn't deleted that masturbation scene which is basically the girl sticking her hands in a bundle of light.
>Violence Jack
I guess this is why the story became so infamous. Manga is definitely better and more than just mindless violence and sex. The most memorable thing about the first OVA was the title. The second one was the best (compared to the other two) and I found it rather amusing Horiuchi voiced another guy with tits. The third one was ok, the chain saw scene in the beginning is probably the most famous part.
>Kyuukyoku no Chef wa Oishinbo Papa
I honestly enjoyed this the most, to my surprise, probably because it didn't take itself seriously at all and I had 0 expectations anyway.
If you marathon any long running anime you'll get bored out of it. I tend to watch 6 different ones at a time.
That's what I've been doing actually. I used to watch two episodes per day at most at the same time with new series and rewatching old favourites. The 30-ish episodes were my favourites, but now I'm at episode 60 and it's gotten kind of dull again.
>regergitates a wikipedia article
God you're simple aren't you? Yes. As I said, in name and in name along the two OVAs are related however in every other regard they are not. Call it a spiritual successor, call it a spinoff, call it whatever you want but it is not a direct sequel. Anybody who looks into the staff who worked on it and the circumstances in which each show was produced should find it abundantly clear that the two are very different production and they are meant to be. So when I see people complaining about how Diebuster wasn't just more of exactly what Gunbuster was I can only imagine they are simple people who read SEQUEL, while ignoring 20 years of difference in production dates and an entirely new group of staff. Do not follow franchises or even studios for that matter, the people who work on the anime in creative lead positions are the ones who effect how an anime turns out. Judging Doebuster based on criteria that the show wasn't even attempting to meet is asinine.
I may try that. I want to watch some longer shows but I dread trying to finish anything that is over 30 episodes per season.
>but now I'm at episode 60 and it's gotten kind of dull again.
You're still doing it too frequently then. I only touch Urusei Yatsura once a week to watch three episodes at most. I'm varying between Sailor Moon, Nadia, Votoms, Harlock, Bubblegum Crisis Tokyo 2040, GUNDAM 0079 and 0083 just so It won't get nauseating.
FUCK SAILOR MARS SAILOR JUPITER IS BETTER!! SAILOR MARS IS FUCKING ASSHOLE SERIOUSLY WHAT FUCK IS HER PROBLEM SHE EVEN CALLED USAGI A RETARD WHAT THE FUCK REI
I've been binge watching the fuck outta Sailor Moon for the past couple weeks am nearly finished Sailor R it's very entertaining i honestly
never expected Sailor Moon to keep my attention for so long. It's such a wonderful show it has such nice colors and a amazing soundtrack.
It's also surprisingly kinda funny, it's also as i would describe quite a "whip lashy" show it
can get super serious at times. Which i find quite odd. But i honestly don't mind the oddities of this show i think it just adds to the extreme experience that is Sailor Moon. It is probably one of my favorite pieces of fiction i really do love that show.
Thanks user, I was planning to get into the franchise and now I know what I can skip
I'm watching Macross.
Where should I start with it?
Is there a female(non-slutty) equivalent of Ryo Saeba?
i.e being extremely charming, but also a great combatant.
What i enjoyed about this series is that Ryo would occasionally turn into a female josei character's wet dreams.
I want to ram ranma
I've watched whole Bubblegum Crisis yesterday. Really don't understand why it's so prized. Was ok at best.
Birdy is awesome.
I like it quite a bit. It is so quintessentially 80s in a very earnest and charming way.
I like gunman wing because it's my introduction to anime. But you can start to see some of the tropes that fuck over post 2000 anime starting to develop.
Like Wen being an emo loner kid aggressive at everyone (or was it hero) ect.
The show did take time out to develop on these personality traits. The mentally scared teenagers thrown into a war actually have a reason for being there. There is a reason why they are still only teens. the shit they have to face gets addressed. Their personal flaws and traits gt to have say in the story. Like sandrock covering for the others to retreat into space once it turns out they fucked up.
Angel Heart could have been good, but the main character has the personality of a carrot
a4e encodes are bad and/or badly dated at this point (or 2009 too). Try to get Rabbit Force, that'S R2J.
Anything pre 2010 is too ugly for me.
Also, not enough good SoL shows
Evangelion is the only good older anime. No exceptions.
She only really begins to slowly change as a character when Fersen comes into play, but then again, do not expect much until the last parts of the anime, she's not really meant to be sympathetic or complex until later, mostly for drama to be sure, but at least you have something to look forward to even if you dislike her.
>Anything pre 2010 is too ugly for me.
L O L
thanks for the tip user!
>Almost 30 years later, Birdy is still not allowed to arrest Christella Revi.
so sad
I would absolutely watch if only it were subbed.
Manga artist lose steam and creative output after ten years or so.
Just finished ZZ Gundam, probably one of the worst anime I forced myself to finish. Moving on to Char's Counterattack.
ZZ is a pleb filter.
Patlabor 2 is a bunch of boring Oshii navel gazing.
Watched 7 episodes of Key The Metal Idol. The designs are ugly, the the pacing is bad, the first few episodes are really bad, the animation is bad, the characters range between bland and bad...
Has anybody watched it? does it get good? I feel this show should appeal to me but everything about it is so poorly made that it's hard to keep interest.
I'm almost done with Sailor Moon Stars. People have always told me it's the best season, and it's good but so far, unless the ending is really really good I think S was better.
>she’s not meant to be sympathetic or complex
I’m not sure about that honestly.
It’s pretty clear that the whole tragedy of her character is that she’s a good person at heart, but she’s been forced into a role which she’s not cut out for due to her sheltered upbringing. I find it really hard to blame her for how she acts. It’s her environment that corrupts her.
>People have always told me it's the best season
wat... no it's not
SMC or Koten Gars? What is the best encode?
CCA is terrible.
I downloaded everything from SMC because I'm lazy so I don't know.
Japanese were so good at animation but nearly always trash with plot and nearly anything involved with it.
With the new Super Robot Taisen coming out in a few days, I decided to sit down and watch Rayearth to prepare for it. Cephiro is some good, old-fashioned mid-90s fantasy design kino, and so far it's so CLAMP i'm getting diabetes. I gotta say I was not expecting Hikaru to be this girly though, i'm too used to the character dynamic of tomboy/oujo/nerd.
>probably one of the worst anime I forced myself to finish.
I remember the feeling.
>I’m not sure about that honestly.
Maybe if you didn't stop reading my post halfways you could have gotten the keywords -UNTIL LATER-, where in fact the anime shows exactly that, but for a good part of the show Marie is nothing but an insufferable spoiled brat.
She was pretty tomboyish, at least for the standards back then.
The thing is that modern tomboyish is a turbo macho dyke without any kind of charisma and charm.
The second OVA is the good shit for people who like the SOL aspect more than the movies, but it's a direct continuation of the not-quite-as-good 48 episode long tv series.
>Japanese
*Tomino
It's general rule for them. Few exceptions I can think of right now are GiTS and Monster.
She's not that, but she's also not done anything overtly masculine at all yet. If anything she reminds me of a less cowardly Usagi. Granted I'm not that far in yet.
Then it must be S. If you tell me it's anything other than S you're just plain wrong.
