If they'd somehow fucked, she probably would've told him it didn't mean anything to avoid making herself vulnerable, and hoping he would correct her and tell her he cared. He would've taken this at face value, been hurt but not said anything, so as not to cause a fuss. She would think he sees her as nothing but a sex object and get even more depressed, and take it out on him. He'd think she was regretting sleeping with him because he's a pathetic loser, and get depressed too. He'd give her space and she'd think he was abandoning her, etc.
Their problem was an inability to communicate honestly with each other. Having sex with someone doesn't mean you're going to be honest with them.

I never really had a horse in the EVA waifu race but it kind of fucked me up when I only recently realized Asuka was only 13 until almost the very end of the series.
I'm no judgemental moralfag by any means and drawing a line between 13 and 14 is completely arbitrary, but it's still easy to forget that the Children are middle-schoolers with how they look and act. I'd probably be a lot more sympathetic with her and the others seeing them as barely more than kids rather than on the edge of adulthood.

In a lot of anime and cartoons, teenage characters are just slightly short adults, which is stupid. There's a lot more to growing up than just physically going through puberty.

I’d say those shows are distinct and know what they want to be. It’s just clear that they took influence from Eva. Like Rahxephon is Eva but with a musical theme. The monsters have musical names like Falsetto and the protagonist and pilot is referred to as the instrumentalist - which has a double meaning.
You could also watch the Patlabor movies, especially the 2nd one. They were directed by Mamoru Oshii, director of Ghost In The Shell.
I also think that the show that best replicated Eva wasn’t even a Mecha show, it was Madoka Magica.

In the midst of making Eva, I suddenly realized that I had forgotten her. Her very existence. For example, in episode seven, I remembered and added one shot with Rei. I had no attachment to her at all. I think that was okay, because in episode eight, she didn't appear. Not even in a single shot.
Episode 6 was too early.
At the end Rei says "I don't know what to do," and Shinji says, "I think you should smile," and Rei smiles. ... Afterwards, when I thought about it, I cursed. In short, if she and Shinji completely "communicated" there, then isn't she over with? At that moment, Rei, for me, was finished.
When she smiled, she was already finished, this character.

As in the main series Shinji and Asuka, hell even Rei are incapable of understanding each other, it's not just them the adults around them are all stunted adult chidlren as well, the absolute worse environment for a healthy development for those who clearly needed it. It's a wonderful failure of the human heart's weaknesses that's what it felt like Eva was a whole to me.

To me as a kid, the fanservice made me reflect upon myself. Just like Shinji was exploring his sexuality seeing Asuka and Rei, nudity and all that and trying to deal with it, so was I. It was pretty effective at the time. It's obvious the fanservice is more than just fanservice (although it is that as well). For instance, Misato's promiscuity is an important part of her character as well as her development

Good observation, Anno said in an interview that he thinks of Japan as a nation of children who refuse to take responsibility and grow up and was disgusted of old salarymen reading h-manga in the train. Shin Godzilla is also essentially about Japan growing up and becoming independent as a country and finally dealing with its own problems. (Yeah, that is the point of the movie).
Shinji and Asuka are the only ones that grow up through the events of the show, hence they are the only ones to emerge from the LCL.
