SoL is a hard thing to get right, too often it's just CGDCT and no attention is paid to atmosphere, soundtrack and characters. When SoL is done right and you get the atmosphere right along with the soundtrack and characters you get Non Non Biyori, Sora no Woto, Hakumei to Mikochi, Shoujo Shuumatsu Ryouko etc. when you get it wrong you get Hinako Note, Anima Yell etc.

All the great SoL shows have great world building and memorable characters with the best of all being Aria and the best Manga being YKK.

Maybe if you'd watched them in a different order you'd be complaining about how plain NNB is. I only got around to it recently and its one of the only SoL I've dropped from at least 50 similar series.
SoL does feel like an area where it's hard to judge why a series doesn't work for you compared to the others. I'm just glad most of them do work for me.

I loved Vacation, but it's a kind of movie that I'd rather enjoy in the comfort of my own home than in a crowded movie theater. I'd have probably still went to see it if there were any screening in my town before the bluray release.
