It was hard to adapt because the VN had multiple routes which branched very early. I can't really think of any anime that adapted a VN with that structure well besides for Clannad, So it can be done, it just takes very deft writing on the part of whoever's adapting it.
I know most people wont agree but I liked the way they amalgamated the routes, cutting the Kagari=Yuuki shit was a good idea though I think some things like the TA stuff could have been cut entirely since they were filler in the anime.I think only adapting one route would have been a disservice, I wouldn't have minded 12 epsiodes for VA then 12 fo PR with a MWC OVA like some anons thought might happen but I think what we got was a pretty decent way to adapt the story whilst keeping in good stuff from each route.
