mira nikki was great. the ending fight was bad. the kid becomes god because his imaginary friend he drempt up was god and made a game for him to play with others which turned out to be real and not psychosis at all. and all the bad things that happened to every one else who played the game in their past was undone by a selfless act of the main character who then pouts in the dying dimension but everything is fine in the fresh new dimension he created by changing the past

While I do not care much for SAO or .hack, both stories were being written up at the same time with the main difference being that .hack got released in game, manga, and anime format before SAO.

Both could be seen as "ripoffs" of the movie Tron which dealt with the concepts of being trapped in a game and death in a game meaning death in real life.
