That's kinda the point. Sex Pistols is actually an absolutely rubbish stand, it's six remote stands with the power to hover and kick kinda hard. Him using it together with a gun is him effectively adapting to his stand, not his stand adapting to him.

Stuff like Black Sabbath or Sheer Heart Attack are just following orders and repeat the same few lines when they meet a certain requirement.
Some stands like Echoes Act 3 are sentient and talk to communicate with their user, give advice, etc.
Stands like Hermit Purple are incapable of talking for obvious reasons.
Stands like Star Platinum or King Crimson only act as a speaker for their user, because they don't have sentience and are under direct control of the user.

It goes to 7 since it skips 4, because Mista has an obsession with 4 being bad luck

Adding into that, Sex Pistols could easily poke people's eyes in medieval era, no gun required. So I don't think any stand would be useless in the old times.

I could see them being used for stuff like carrying needles/nails and stabbing his enemy right through the gaps and chinks in armour. Plus he'd still be able to intercept arrows and rocks flying at him probably easier than bullets.
