Anima Yell was bad. It was derivative of other, better shows, it didn't show the cheerleading aspects much (only using them as an excuse for cute girls to do cute things), the characters are cookie cutter, the animation was simply average, and so on. It simply didn't stand out for a CDGCT, and there's a reason why it's mostly forgotten now outside of Yea Forums.

I don't think anyone denied that volleyball matches were the weakest part of Harukana Receive. It become especially obvious in the last episodes which were pretty much nothing but volleyball with very little character interaction compared to the earlier ones.

It's also strange how often some variant on generic is used to insult them, when you need to have watched a lot to be able to judge if something is generic. I assume to them it needs something like Gakkou Gurashi to avoid being generic.

This would be great if Nips could be trusted to actually create a realistic distribution and not just randomly mix genders together in the story or else force genders into roles to get 50:50. For example, an anime about a restaurant or stewardesses can have mostly female characters because female waitresses and stewardesses are more common than their male counterparts. However, an anime about medieval soldiers going to war should be no less than 100% male soldiers. No female soldiers should exist in the story AT ALL. The only females in the story should be their wives who stay at home, any captured enemy women who get raped on the spot or sold into slavery, and maybe a nun or a nurse who lives at a fortress but not at a remote war camp.

female characters forced into non-female roles is often a sign that the writer knows he's writing shit. Personally, it takes me out of the story, but maybe that's just because I've seen this shit so many times in other anime. For a current example, look at Tate no Yuusha. Pretty much every female character is pure dogshit and has no business being female, except for maybe Melty.

How do you feel about tomboy characters? They aren't that unrealistic and can provide the non-girly element easy enough.
The main issue I see is when a series without any magical elements decides to have the physically strongest characters as female despite them being tiny. It's so common that it stops being as noticeable at some point though.
