I had a friend get a whole sleeve tattoo of the main character and so I watched it because he loved it. It was ok, the hyperviolence was the only redeeming thing about it imo. I'm surprised people even know it exists. Like was it ever on streaming sites in the states?

One of the first series I downloaded complete and binged. Good shit. Great OP that I can still hear. A little dumb looking back, like Chobits, but my heart doesn't care. I love them.
I honestly think if Elfen Lied aired today, Yea Forums and reddit would go nuts for it. It really isn't much worse than muh goblin violence or muh neverland ranch aliens.

If I remember right, Okamoto also wrote this one manga about a cross-dressing ski jumper. One of the chapters included this rather spontaneous rape scene with the main girl and some old guy from a tournament judge's committee or some shit. A volume later, Okamoto had an afterword addressing some very angry hate mail he got for including the scene, with readers calling it really edgy and uncalled of. I got a giggle out of it. The manga sucked, by the way. Not worth a read at all.

Read the manga, which is an entertaining read similar to the author's later works like Brynhildr and Parallel Paradise. The anime is an abysmal adaptation of it that's just pure pretentious early 00s emo-pandering shlock.
