Last time, Kanade's host family told her about Andrea's issues about being separated from her family. Realizing that they spoke Spanish in Venezuela and not Venezuelian, Kanade was able to use a translation app on her phone to better communicate with Andrea and pick up a few basic Spanish words, the effort seemingly helping bridge the gap between them. During the next day's classes, the idea of rhythm clicked with Kanade and while practicing it with her Diana she got advice from Garrel about finding her own way to dance. While Kanade mused that she wouldn't mind staying at the school, Andrea prepared for her debut.
This time, volume 11 starts with Kanade's last day in Marseille.
Well, we get a lot of stuff for sure. Just for March to May period there like 500 different series about to be published. There's 170 different series per month on average. And manga have been published in France since the mid-90. All in all, I think now the USA sell more in terms of absolute sells thanks to the bigger market size though, but as far as I know it's mostly focused on a limited number of series, while there's an extreme diversity of series published in France (and if you use the "per capita" argument, I think France is still 2nd after Japan in term of sells). Even some very culturally specific stuff like Chihayafuru or Barakamon is published here.
Not everything is published though, i'm still waiting for Kaguya-sama for example, it's quite strange this one couldn't find a publisher considering it's quite successful in Japan now (it's probably under licencing negociations I guess).

Yeah, over here a lot of what we get falls into what I'd term your Toonami series (shonenshit, stuff like OPM, JoJo, etc.) with some ecchi stuff and then the kind of things comic journalist sites would like. A series like this kind of slips through or gets stuck with a digital only release by a no-name licensor and most of what I read is stuff that has no real hope of being licensed because publishers likely think there's no real market for it.
Saotome Senshu's the only thing I read that I can see getting licensed.
By the way, when comparing the scans to the official translation, the scan look pretty acurate 95% of the time. There are some few subtil differences on certain pannels though. Like how Sakura's mother reflexion is not as brutal in chapter 30, or how it's less obvious that Nichols wants Kanade to form a clone of herself but could also be understand as the fact she's more simply searching for a successor for the Royal Ballet, and other little details that look small but are relatively relevant for all the lore of the series and the psychology of the characters.
Kanade clearly doesn't look like a 13 years old girl here. She'll be 1,90m at 18 y.o. and will have to stop ballet.

How does it handle the foreign languages? I'm curious how the American version does it too. It's such an integral part of the series, especially in this story arc, that I appreciate the scanlator going the extra mile to actually include the languages.
Quite weird, I was curious to see how they'd do it. It was OK at the beginning, they just used italic font to show it, but all the chapters in Marseille with various languages between Japanese/English/Spanish/French are all over the place and they edited it badly with no consistance at all, it was quite disapointing to be desu. Quite strange, as this publisher is usually serious and their publication director is very well known and serious, and a live wiki on popular Japanese entertainment (pic related, it's the guy who's not Miyamoto). He has free entry into every big Japanese book publishers and video games developpers and personally knows a shitload of developpers and mangaka.
What a nice little way to end this arc on. Unsurprisingly Kanade was able to get through to Andrea by the end and Andrea's obviously very grateful for the kindness shown to her. Personally I hope Kanade ends up back here with her and Maho.
That's all for this chapter though. Next time the focus will be on Sakura as we chack back in with her.

The Roger family looks serisouly wealthy to be desu. Good job Kanade for avoiding Marseille's northern districts by the way. But then again it's not hard to spot it when you're entering a third world shithole area.
Never underestimate the absolute lack of basic culture amongst Japanese about everything that is not Japanese. As examples, a hell fucking lot of them don't even know what a svastika represents in western countries, or don't even know that roman letters are not pronounced the same way depending on the countries (they pretty much only know the English pronunciation).

Another detail for example: according to the scans, Sakura didn't have any choice about where to go, but according to the French translation, it's Sakura herself who wanted to learn under the Vaganova method, and her mother who accordingly picked the school. Don't know which one is right. By default, I'll take the professionnal translation over the scan.

The two don't seem contradictory the way I read it in the scans, honestly. Kanade asks why she chose Munich specifically, which explains the first part of the statement, and the "but" would suggests that the second part was her choice.

Also funny enough, I'd never really given ballet a second thought though I always liked most of the music when I'd hear it come up on a local classical music program (I really like the Adagio from Paquita and Le Chaos from Les Elemens). But reading through this series once and then going through it again as I'm dumping it has given me an appreciation for ballet. There's a local company/school doing Cinderella in May and I'm honestly considering going since it's pretty cheap. Probably would've never considered it without this series.
I can read that and get the same meaning as the professional one with the "but" albeit maybe worded a bit more awkwardly. And the art and deleting it for a different message still obviously means the same thing anyway.

I wonder. In the end, whatever the situation and the place, Kanade just goes full genki whenever she dances or learn new dancing stuff. She's probably just full on genki-hormones when she says she wants to go there. It would be somehow weird to have introduced 2 characters (Nichols and Oliver Whateverhisname), and started a whole plotline between Kanade, Nichols and Luda since like volume 4, set her as a goal and model, and letting it go just like that. Or maybe Nichols has been set up as some sort of "antagonist" for Kanade as a way for her to make efforts to specifically avoid becoming a clone and develop her own way to dance? Still, it feels a bit like, for the Japanese audience, having a bigger set like the Royal Ballet, Opéra de Paris or NYC Ballet would have more appeal. Marseille school doesn't have this sort of grand name that would talk to them. But then again, until now Kanade has always been not far from the top in her concours and performances, but never at the top. So maybe Marseille school fits this trend: good enough to be close to the top, but still not the top. US schools have been mentionned too, but it would be quite unexpected to be desu, considering we never saw anyone representative from here until now.

Well she prefers classical so she'd get that at a school like the Royal or NYC or wherever compared to Marseille which has a greater focus on contemporary. But the environment seems good for her (I imagine Royal would be a hell of a lot more rigorous and formal) and Garrel just seems like he'd be a better mentor for her than Abby.
But it all depends too. America would be an interesting curveball but we haven't had any prominent teachers based out of there yet. But she'll probably do well with American audiences and I'd imagine she'd love the opportunity to do theater though I don't know if there are roles in Broadway that would be just dancing.

However, it has to be said that Kanade herself admitted time and time again she copied Nichols interpratations, because it was to hard for her to understand the various roles and acting on her own understanding. But as she's growing as a dancer, learn more ways to dance and new technics, as well as she's becoming more mature, she starts to understand acting more and more, and she's questionning herself more and more about what kind of dancer she wants to become, so her reliance on Nichols would logically fade. At least, she's clearly started to question her will to follow Nichols unconditionnally.
And Garrel's speech some chapters ago about her trying to become a clone rather than trying to find her own way to dance seemed to have left a deep impact on her (pic related). So maybe the Royal Ballet is not as carved in stone as it seemed to be first, see

I think it's one of those series that's not overly Japanese or anime. It's just a nice story about a girl who loves ballet and works really hard to accomplish her dream which is fairly universal.

I think it's just a result of where a lot of anime/manga is right now. I think 30 or 35 years ago this would've had a chance at being a fairly popular series but in Japan sports series I think have largely fallen by the wayside unless they have a cast that appeals to fujos and the west has never really cared about sports series outside of something like Captain Tsubasa because of how universal soccer is (well, there's Germany and it's love of Attack No. 1 for whatever reason). Ballet, on the other hand, is very niche so I can only imagine it appealing to people with a knowledge of ballet mostly.
Also most people would rather just read about power fantasy stuff hence why battle shonen is as strong as ever and power fantasy isekai shit has been the hot thing for a while.
So what's ostensibly a sports series centered on ballet where the character largely has to get where they are through hard work (and hard work, practice and so on are emphasized throughout the series) is already putting it off peoples' radars.
