I strongly dislike all the Rebuilds but at least the early PV for 3.0 promised a pretty cool conspiracy/spy movie in the same vein as episode 21. I was really hoping that would redeem 2.0 in some way. Who knows, since the teaser for Final was so shit maybe the opposite will happen and the movie will actually be decent.

3.0 was so utterly unbelievably shitty.
No eva, no fighting, some random airships and the world gone and YAOI LOL for 80% of the movie.

It's the ultimate sendoff / indictment of 80's otaku and a personal statement about depression vs a petty vendetta. People that like rebuild are actually abhorrent.

I don't mind the (relative) lack of action, hell episode 15 is amazing and there were no Evas. But what was there was just completely pointless, they just focused even more on showcasing CG abominations, technobabble and all the accessory aesthetic shit Evangelion is known for without any actual substance.
Even the homo times with Kaworu were disappointing since they didn't do absolutely anything new with his character and his relationship with Shinji.

They took a movie to cover roughly the same ground as episodes 23 and 24 did, but did it worse. If anything, 3.0 revealed how shallow of a character Kaworu really is. His shtick gets old really fast. He had the perfect amount of screentime in the original series.

This. The most interesting part of Kaworu's character for me is trying to judge whether he's good, evil, or simply not part of human morality like all the other angels. In NGE you can actually debate this because he says lots of nice things but ultimately he knows the whole time that he'll end up fighting Shinji, yet still goes through with it - but then there's the twist that he lets Shinji "win" at the end too.
Since I don't care about fujoshit and it's pretty clear that Shinji is just a straight guy who was desperate for any kind of genuine affection by ep. 24, that's the most interesting part of Kaworu for me. But in 3.0 it's literally just scene after scene after scene of fujo pandering, and then he's dead so we can have our mandatory Shinji tears to tell us this is meant to be a really sad moment because Kaworu was so pure and perfect.

3.0 is where Anno went full retard. He's so insecure and conscious about Rei being more popular he went all out, attacking and defaming Rei whilst promoting Asuka.

The only parts of it that were any good were the parts lifted from the original. The action was more shonen-y, the high school scenes were more romcom-y, Mari was a pointless addition to the franchise.

The whole thing just didn't feel like Eva.

But people loved 2.22. It had potential, just because you and a few elitist hated it doesn't mean it was bad.

During the series they have poor relations, which bottle up into the climax where Shinji takes out his rage onto Asuka. You know, for all the time she treated him like shit.

You can’t wreck a wreckage.

He did it because he'd just returned from instrumentality, a world where nothing is real and interactions are impossible. The whole point of Eva is that through our interactions with others we are capable of giving and receiving hurt or compassion. Shinji chokes Asuka, she comforts him, confirming Instrumentality is over and people can hurt and comfort each other again. Asuka ends the movie with "kimochi warui," an ambiguous line, because human relationships in the real world are ambiguous.

I think you're right when you say it had less potential than NGE, and I also think we want the same thing: a respectful, working Evangelion. In my opinion, I think something as good as or just less good, would also be acceptable if it were different in a constructive way.
That said Episode 19 is also around three quarters into the series - even though 2.22 features content from episode 19 and 23, it's really more around episode 13 that's a fair comparison in my view.

Asuka and Kaworu waifu-fanbases, in particular. Hence why they're the only two popular character left while the rest jumped ship.
Rei was smashed with something worse than a reset button, the delete button.
Instead of being comatose and broken, Asuka is now a fighting warrior girl.
Kaworu instead of being a monster of the week, is now a solid participator in the plot who has observed everything since the start.
Those are heavy, but shallow upgrades, which is what the hardcore fanbase of these want.

But the true fanbase being pandered to are the writers. The above heavily coincides with their tastes, so they're naturally the ones to blame.

Yeah, the Rebuilds didn't turn out to be what they should have been, a serious, respectful take on NGE that didn't just introduce characters willy-nilly and then forget them. The problem was that it made a lot of new stuff, and then didn't follow throw. At the time 2.22 was made, Mari needn't be pointless. That she eventually became pointless, we can blame on Anno and him making 3.33 the way he did.

But 2.22 isnt different in any constructive way it just takes parts of NGE and made them worse.

I found the mystery introduced in 1.11 with SEELE to be worth building onto, and Asuka's, Rei and Mari's characterization and not to mention Shinji's could be worked with to explore new sides of the character.

NGE and EoE are part of the same series since the latter directly follows the former, series doesn’t have to mean the episodes of a TV-series. You can’t really talk about NGE without also talking about EoE.

That's fine, she's a good character. I'd like to warn you a bit, I won't quote them but there are several people who had troubles understanding Asuka's depth and importance in Evangelion.
Asuka is cool on the exerior, but on the interior she was supposed to be more like a puppet, highlighting her own tragedy. Rei was on the exterior like a puppet, but on the inside, had a strong personality no one could dominate.
Unfortunately some people didn't want to accept this juxtaposition, and rather became like Asuka, deeply resentful of Rei and in denial about their own problems - in this case Asuka's.

Regardless, 2.22 was at the end half-way through. While it had many problems such as rewriting Asuka to become more popular, it captured the action-y feel the first half of NGE had.

He isn't pandering to one section of waifufags over another. The movie is as dour and miserable as possible because he hates all the super fans. Shinji being asleep for years is a metaphor for withdrawing from life. In the end though, allegory and deeper meaning can't patch up that it's a garbage movie. All the subtext in the world can't make up for terrible text. Imagine for one second that you took someone who never saw Eva and isn't really an anime fan, and showed them the Rebuilds. 3.0 would be an incomprehensible dour mess. Now imagine saying to them

It's something different. Rebuild Kaworu actively manipulates Shinji to get him to do something he's suspicious of, knows nothing about, and Seele had already attempted and failed without him. Before, Shinji's involvement was incidental and it was more about his deluding himself.

You're right, it was in many ways worse and all of the characters were rewritten. Some to look bad, some to be pointless, and others to look good. Neither of them are good characters, unfortunately and 3.33 killed the last chance they had since they stopped developing in the crucial act.
I didn't mean to single out Asuka, but for me it's hard to ignore that she's had no real problems so far and she's the director's favorite, while Rei.... wow. It's better to not get the evil eye of Anno.

I completely agree with how they botched Asuka's character. Because Rei fans miss the point of Eva as much as possible. Of course they're the ones being singled out, but I have severe doubts that that's the case and it isn't Anno being extremely stingy with non-Shinji character development and looking for quick ways to accomplish what the TV series spend much more time on.

I also think it's horrible what they did to Asuka, and it's very bothersome that this is the most popular Asuka has been. It seems Anno has hit the mark with the audience he wants to grasp. We can only question why Anno wanted have this kind of popularity for Asuka.

Normally I would be inclined to agree, because I have belief in Anno - but I can't really answer this riddle without looking at how he's treated Asuka versus how he's treated Rei. With Rei it's like he absorbed all the fandom hatred toward her, and made it real in the Rebuilds. Now Rei really is just a mom clone doll in the Rebuilds, right? But somehow, Asuka really is that fighting warrior princess with super strength and eternal youth. He's sold us all out when he did this.

You're not alone, Misato also suffered here, since now all Misato can do is look cool fighting in a ship while her actual character makes no sense and just introduced plotholes.

Because 2.22 still developed characters and had a tone of realism consistent with the previous movie. It was, regardless of the new things introduced, constructive as opposed to destructive. With spending two movies on developing Rei, and removing her at he half way mark, he's arguably sabotaged the entire series itself there. Failing to make something out of Asuka like NGE did is also something 3.33 did. We could probably go on for hours about how blaming Shinji makes no sense, or being dismissive of Rei doesn't quite seem realistic to do in the story.

Because 3.0 spent no time being constructive, but just destructive, 1.0 + 3.0 can't hope to be two movies worth of content.

Rei is the most popular character in Japan, and Anno said he only cares about Japan when making EVA. But the Rei fan group from the 90's are largely in their 40's and even 50's now. They've already moved on.
I think more than Rei fans, Asuka fans missed the point since they remained, and maybe that's why the Rebuilds caters to them so much?

What's the point of Shinji being depressed about a character we know is a joke (Rei Q), or a character that isn't Asuka but just really some boosted up version the writers wanted?

Blaming Shinji makes sense in context of the movie, he is really the only one they have to blame since they are unaware of Gendo’s and SEELE’s plan.

I definitely agree that if they had no idea SEELE and Gendo had a plan, that it would make more sense, but they state that they do in the movie. They also know they want Shinji for another impact. Truly I wish it made sense, but it doesn't.

True but that's Shinji, Rei herself is gone. It's a dismissal of Rei's existence which creates a gaping hole the movie or story can't recover from. Removing Rei was fatal in many ways. Fans couldn't take it seriously and suspect Anno of foul play, (and I have to agree they have a good case), and without strong characters to drive the movie we're left with Shinji and it's over.

I agree it doesn't come from audience perception, but I find it difficult to undersell 2.22 and 1.11 in such a way. They weren't as good as NGE, but they hit many notes right and created a future for 3.33 and 4.44, whereas 3.33 sabotaged both itself and 4.44.

He is good indeed, but there is more to EoE than Shinji. Where would the movie be without Rei's development and intervention, or Misato's love for Shinji ?

Yet Rei Q is the stand-in we're stuck with. It's a character we don't care for, because in the bottom of our hearts we all know it's a fatal blow to Rei's characters and has no chance to be good in any respect. Even Rei from 2.22 is effectively lost to us, as even if she comes back, there won't be much character to develop.

They all needed that critical movie to develop Rei, Misato and Asuka so there would be some point in finalizing them in the final arc, but now, as Anno chose to promote a vision of the characters that made Asuka and Kaworu strong and damned the rest, that's what's in store for us in 4.0. I hate to say it, but it would seem this is what happened. Asuka's character was botched too, to the dismay of many Asuka fans, as for Misato fans. Sure many are happy about "QMisato" (big following on tumblr and in the west, strangely) and Asuka who recently got crowned the most popular Eva character in the Rebuilds, but the characters are shallow nonetheless.

With Rei it's more subtle, seeing as she continues from 2.22, gets fed by Shinji and becomes poka-poka. Not quite the same Rei, but still gets a damsel in distress status. Assumed saved.

He was right to fear he was unfit to parent and send Shinji away, because he saw nothing wrong with how he housed and raised Rei, and he couldn't allow anyone else to parent her in his stead because she was his payload. He also concealed Rei's nature from her, making her repressed and afraid of herself, of what she suspected about herself, causing her to isolate from people further. Then Shinji arrived, Rei warmed to one other person in her whole life and had a point of reference to contrast Gendo's treatment of her with Shinji's, and by the time she figured out what she was, she was mad at Gendo and had formed no other attachments but Shinji.
