Why is shading bad?

why is shading bad?

unshaded areas = soul

The pitfall of shading is that the more complicated it is the worse the game of telephone is.
The key animator has to indicate his intent to the inbetweener who then needs to trace / do his thing and then pass on his finished work to the girl doing color who then has to interpert both the work of the inbetweener and the the original instructions from the key animator.
The more complicated that is the more of a chance any party fucks it up.

Hair and skin aren't reflectant the way a piece of plastic is, but that isn't even close to the only thing wrong about the way db looks now.

the line weight is the worse issue here

It's not bad, they just wanted to go with a more lighthearted and colorful tone.

It wasn't until i saw the manga that i realized Goku was supposed to have a look of pity in that scene.

The new style is way better. The shading they've used for years always looked stiff and plasticy, the newer designs look like they have a lot more meat to them. Plus it allows them to make smoother animations, it's just better all around. I always disliked the highlighted hair on sayains, it should be a solid black like it used to be. That's all.

>shading which gives a sense of depth is "plasticy"
>flat colors are more lifelike
You are a fucking idiot.

What I mean it overall looks visually better. The Yamamura shading has a sheen to it, skin doesn't reflect like that.

this is a bad example
the original actually is less expressive, it just made goku look mad all that time

Yamamuro's Goku looks smaller compared to Shintani's Goku.

first of all, that's not Yamamuro's Goku.

it's a fan mockup , alright?

Remember for a second that anime is animation, and that those pictures need to be able to move freely. Complex shading throws a big wrench into that plan.

Takes too long. Complicated when stuff is moving.

The expression on the bottom one is closer the intended thanks to the eyebrows, but the line weight variety and colouring is better on the top.
Though I'd argue that the ways the shading lands on him in either one makes his form make no sense.

Yikes yamamuro art is too "detailed". Sure looks out of place.

Jesus Christ

it cost shekels: less shade, more shekels saved for producer.

z ruined that scene

Man, I miss the blood.

again, it's a mockup

it's a given that it looks out of place

the shintani one looks kind of bad.

even a "normie" RT reviewer pointed out the dated looking art style.

god faulconer z was so good
we all agree on this

Oh, the deluded Americans wake up.

>Hair and skin aren't reflectant the way a piece of plastic is
cel shading is good and not mean to be perfectly realistic

agreed

Because animators of this millennium are not as talented in that regard.

sad but true

How can art be dated?

top soul

bottom soulless

One piece was always bad.

Samefag

Normal version is from anime where did the reddish version comes from?

skypiea special that aired last year on TV.

>Having pity for the guy who just killed your best friend, tried to kill another one of your friends who said best friend and son risked life and limb to save, killed an entire race including it's children
>And that's just Namek
Freiza deserved no pity

A shame its ruined by Oda's ugly as fuck artstyle.

You're joking, right? The bottom looks like goku's skin is made of gloss paint and his arms look like legos. It's absolutely laughable.

Hey, not all colours are girls. :(

That is both a myth and a lie.

You know what the solution to that is right? Use different shading techniques for different materials.

This. Z frieza was an irredeemable asshole. Z had the right idea in ignoring what tori did, and making Goku not feel sorry for him.

Because it costs money and the children who watch this don't care anyway.

You people are retarded.

That panel is supposed to say more about Goku than about Frieza. It wasn't that Frieza deserved pity, it was that Goku pitied the fact that he had to kill a strong guy

>headcanon

>waku waku isn't happy that he killed a strong rival
>headcanon

Waku Waku Goku is truly the worst thing to happen to this franchise. It's also proof that Tori's autism constantly needs to be in check.

It isnt
