There's no strong correlation between any metric of quality and popularity, so implying that the most popular anime should be held as best examples of quality in the medium isn't a valid line of reasoning. I didn't say they were made TO have mass appeal, I said they were popular because they had mass appeal. Things that appeal to most people naturally tend to become popular, there's a real correlation there. Something can be brilliantly written but it's not going to find a wide audience if the subject matter or presentation is thoroughly distasteful.

Study of philosophy has practically nothing to do with writing a kid's cartoon. Philosophy itself is probably the worst subject to attempt to derive authority from because any two philosophers considered eminent in the field can have completely contradictory views in fundamental areas of discourse. The most practical thing that philosophy teaches is how to form a strong argument, which doesn't take very long to teach, and no matter how in-depth you go there will always be assholes who will perform all kinds of mental gymnastics and misrepresentation to find the ridiculous hypotheticals that invalidate any attempt at agreement and consistencies.
For the record, "Duty to others means putting their needs before your own" isn't an axiom you need a PHD to formulate.

I meant popular as in popular with critics not as in popular to braindead normies. Critics dont care about mass appeal. Do you really believe there isnt correlation between popularity with critics and quality? I find that laughable.

Also, I disagree. I do believe the study of philophy (directly or indirectly) has a deep connection to writing shows with depth. While a degree is not necessary to create depth, I would expect writers familiar with philosophy to write better than those which are not and that happens to be the case with Avatar. I dont believe philosophy creates very insightful practical results but it definitely creates great thinkers and great arguments, which can be applied to kids shows.

The Japanese derived "anime" from "animation" to describe to describe it in general, but "anime" itself has become a loanword internationally to describe Japanese animation specifically.
Likewise with how the Japanese derived "lolicon" from "Lolita complex" (ie being a pedophile), but "lolicon" as an international loanword specifically refers to attraction to drawings of young girls rather than the real thing.
