About 4 out of 5 points

Good visual direction is an essential for an anime to great.

Attached: Star Driver grid.jpg (3840x3600, 2.57M)

The plot is what will be shown to you on screen. If what is being shown on the screen is uninteresting, doesn't matter how well filmed or well animated it is, the overall experience will be lackluster.
No matter how well I depict the scene of someone eating breakfast, in the end, it's just someone eating breakfast. It's trivial, non interesting, unimaginative and doesn't work without prior or post context.

Kemono Friends/10

That's a cute boy.

No need to rub it in.

Animation is fundamentally visual. You can strip out all other elements, and it would still be animation. If you remove the visual component, it becomes something else, something other than anination. However, this fact serves only to describe the art form, and says nothing else. It would be fallacious to assert that the visual components somehow take precedence over or are more important than others. Actors, script, music - once added a film becomes as theatrical/literary/musical as it is visual. The "visual medium" argument that springs up in these threads so often is nonsensical, and arguments for the primacy of visuals are undefensible at best.

I'd love to see more for this season honestly. Episode 7 stood out as being really well-done too in terms of visual direction, I bet the last few eps will kick it out the park as well. Good stuff user, Hakyuu Go did astounding work for this production.

What is this from?

Fujiko Mine looks better in stills than in motion.

beautiful.

Does anyone have any JoJo grids? Part 4 and 5 i remember had some pretty striking visual direction

Whats this from?

Attaching that title to that list is giving me a heart attack.

Alien 9

Attached: mpv-shot0009.jpg (1920x1080, 278K)

I believe that's The Woman Called Fujiko Mine

Jojo always ends up having a handful of well directed episodes and most of the rest looking like shit, which makes these adaptions frustrating. For example I remember the Tamami episode looking really stylish, but the show cerainly didn't look great as a whole.

Attached: jojo406_20160506_001.jpg (800x450, 188K)

Literally any show can look good if you cherry pick the shots and put in a 3x3

Captain Earth wasn't fabulous but looked really good, I should make a grid.

Attached: saltydogcoffeecup1.jpg (1280x720, 144K)

That's why you should never make a grid for a show, but rather individual episodes.

Then why does this still look like shit?

I wouldn't put it so harshly, there are some notably bad episodes in the adaptation but everything is still carried with quite a good style that makes the series distinct from everything else airing alongside it every year 5 parts running. Episodes worked on by Shin Hyung Woo in part 4 especially tended to be great, special mention goes to BTD 1, 2 and the final episode in particular for really strong direction. Golden Wind so far is doing the best though, the direction has been consistently good to excellent and we're 22 episodes in with no notable decline in quality since every episode seems to be done in-house.

Pretty visuals bad direction.

>Golden Wind so far is doing the best though, the direction has been consistently good to excellent
Not really, no. I do remember some ugly episodes last season and both Baby Face and Ice Album looked bad. David really should have done split cours for Jojo.

What do you mean by direction, and what is bad about it?

anime is a visual medium so if your show looks like shit you might have a problem

but regardless good visual direction doesn't make it acceptable for a show to have shitty animation, which is why nobody takes garbage like monogatari seriously anymore

>Baby Face and Ice Album looked bad
How? The art was perfectly consistent for both arcs all the way with some absolutely top-tier color palette swaps and really good animation and art in general, which was a surprise since everyone expected Baby Face to be the QUALITY episode. We're all the way past the main villain's reveal and the only ep I'd say actually looked a bit odd compared to the rest was the first half of the first Aerosmith ep and parts of Man In The Mirror.

He's one of these people who
a) think that wide shots are the only good shots
b) stylistic direction is irrelevant unless it's a wideshot
c) doesn't understand symbolic meaning because he doesn't watch the anime he rates the grids of

Don't worry. I do think that VEG looks like shit, too, but that's mostly because the character designs are downright terrible.

>but regardless good visual direction doesn't make it acceptable for a show to have shitty animation
Whoever says shit like this most likely hasn't seen any show older than 1995.
Any Dezaki show still looks better than 99% anime produced today no matter how many shortcuts it took to hide the lack of animation.

i've seen plenty of older shit and in terms of raw skill gundam 0079 probably has better fucking animation than monogatari does

There's literally nothing wrong with limited animation if done well - and Shaft does it extremely well. Monogatari is garbage due to the lack of any substance, not animation.

>which is why nobody takes garbage like monogatari seriously anymore
How much of a newfag are you to think that Monogatari has shitty animation? Did you watch like 50 anime, 35 of which were movies? Monogatari's animation is by no means bad, or even average.

I didn't really care anough to remember all the details, but the drop after Beach Boy was massive. Arcs like the following two that offer nothing distinct animated and are better in manga form make me question the utility of an inconsistent adaption.

I honestly don't see what you mean at all. If anything the last 2 arcs had an actual upgrade in animation. White Album 2 was god-tier with some very creative shots, top-tier use of color, OST and consistently good animation.
sakugabooru.com/post/show/70937
sakugabooru.com/post/show/70950
sakugabooru.com/post/show/70246

The problem with VEG's direction is that Ishidate is mentally like an idiot child, convinced that More is always equal to Better. So he put more lines in the character designs, more details cluttering the frames, more aftereffects and blur and filters everywhere, more fast cuts, more animation no matter how out of place it is (like the hair always floating like they're underwater). And it doesn't stop to the visual direction either, it's the same for the sound: more orchestra constantly blasting trying to tell you what to feel every single moment of runtime. It's so exausting and dumb.

I'm too lazy to make a grid, but the Giant Robo OVAs had some great visual direction. It also nailed that late 60s manga art style perfectly.

Attached: Bashtarle.webm (488x360, 1.66M)

It took a few reverse images searches to figure out that this was Palme ko Ki. The visuals certainly look interesting, but reviews say the movie as a whole isn't that great.

Would you say it's worth watching?

How much value do you put into template threads?

They say it's bad because it's pretty thoroughly plotted, especially for a movie. Not really something most people are able to appreciate. Pic rel is a plot chart I drew up once that doesn't even include the main casts storylines. It's just world building foundation that you're being fed throughout.

They also completely misinterpret the mood swings and think that a romance is being shoehorned into the film, when it's merely the logical conclusion given the traumata the characters have experienced. I read a few in the past and very much got the impression that a) most people who review it have neither seen Pinocchio nor Fantastic Planet (which the film is first and foremost inspired by) or any knowledge of Japanese folklore (the primary narrative is based on similar folklore as the first book of Moribito). So they argue for an emotionally empty vessel, that gains it's emotions by observing and imitating humans, to be "emotional inconsistent". As far as I am concerned it's one of the best anime feature films ever made, but it's certainly a very esotheric experience.

Dezaki is so overrated. Basic ass cinema techniques over literal slideshows and people shit themselves. On top of that, he's horrible at pacing his shows. They all invariably become tedious and drawn-out.

Attached: 2x2.jpg (2398x1299, 1.72M)

Attached: ryu2.jpg (6400x3600, 2.15M)

Fuck off.

Which is why Gamba is his by far best work. Incredible animation for it's time and it got axed, so he was forced to stop at 26 episodes. Initially he wanted it to last for 50. Would have been so shit if he would have had his way.

How about no?

I have never watched it fully, but godamn I love the OP music. youtube.com/watch?v=4t1_35xiub4

Someone will post that one pic that goes over cinematic theory, but in reality you should just trust what you feel looks nice.

Watch anime/movies in general that have it and you'll get a sense soon enough

First of all, start watching some movies and anime that got awards for their visual direction, or distinctive artstyle. Preferably older ones, as they are much more heavily criticized and you will find more opinions on it digestiing what you are seeing.
You will start understanding the reason why some frames are taken from which angle, and why the positioning of the characters on the frame makes all the difference.

>and appreciate
You can't. You either do or you don't. It's inherent and impossible to really change. Either you have a strong interest in aesthetics and arts (usually something that shows throughout your life, for example by being into fashion) or you don't. If you simply want to have fun you shouldn't try to force it and you certainly shouldn't feel bad about it having no interest in it, either.

Can you show me examples of no style and all substance/core ? If those shows have no substance i don't know if you are comparing them to another great anime i don't know about or just actual literature.

That image is bait, but I'd consider this no style and all substance.

The Yamauchi episodes looked nice. Gridworthy even.

>How much value do you put into visual direction?
A lot, visual direction and music direction are the two most important things.

Anime is a niche commercial film industry and "actual literature" refers to all written works throughout history - of course anime will come up short.

No wonder you think that Aku no Hana or Tsuki ga Kirei aren't at least above average, too. Guess the former made you self-insert too hard and the latter showed something you've never experienced, so the directing went out of the windows because "wow look at this rotoscoped shit where's my true celimation!".

You might want to read this, ask yourself if you really think it makes sense, and try again.

Fucking pleb. Read the walking back home after the wrecking and then watch how the anime adapted that. If you still have this pleb opinion after that, neck yourself.

Stop projecting so hard spammer. I just genuinely care about anime.

You do?

Why are you being overly defensive? Does it really hurt your ego when someone doesn't like what you like?

Please. There's a difference between not liking something and pretending that one of the few works with real effort put into it is garbage or has no value.

No one is saying there wasn't effort put into it, there certainly was. The visual direction is just mediocre. They do get an A for effort, though.

Please elaborate and make multiple comparisons to things you believe are above average so i can better understand you.

You can still be elitist despite the board being shit. Just so happens that comparing live action directing to animation makes you look like a complete moron, so I don't really get what image some of these people are aiming for. Besides, Naruto is far from being the worst offender. Virtually any other battle-shonen is a bigger insult. At least the Naruto adaptation doesn't look like dogshit, which already sets it apart from the rest.

It doesn't matter since most anime now has such shit tier character development that I wouldn't want to watch them even if they had better visuals than any other piece of media before them.

That fight scene is so overrated - Mob's character development had already happened so it didn't represent anything, there's never a sense of him actually being in danger and the cosmic desktop wallpaper showed up for no reason. But hey, big explosions yay or whatever.

Found the guy with the IQ below room temperature. Claiming for modern anime to be worse written has got to be a joke. Shows like SDF are basically Nagi no Asukara in space, but without the character development and growth. Same shit tier character run-ins as convenient plot devices to reset relationship.

>there's never a sense of him actually being in danger
Low IQ post.

>this OP
>but it's not the hyoukafag
What?

Looks very much like what it is: a standard definition early digital anime with shit color.

Everything terrible about Angel's Egg are things Oshii has taken the piss out of Myizaki for doing except he did them worse in Angel's Egg.

>shit color.
High saturation fags need to leave. Leeeave.

If it looks good it is always worth watching. You can regret losing 0.0000000000001% of your life later.

It's worse than cel. Just disgusting. That entire era needs to get thrown down the memoryhole.

That episode wouldn't look any different 10 years later. Dennou Coil has the same sort of color palette, it's simply Iso's style. The problem here isn't digital animation, it's you. Hell, those frames have actual contrast and blacks. Now compare that to VEG and you'll realize it's an artistic choice. Whine about low res, I do so on a daily basis. But whining because you dislike minimalistic color compositions simply is retarded. Do you also think that Kaguya-hime looks like shit because it sports a very low contrast palette?

Visuals are a language for communication. In a narrative, every shot exists to convey information. Framing, composition, shapes, colors and so on serve this purpose. This is the foundation for visual DIRECTION.

None. The number of points I give to anime is equal to amount of cute girls in it. For example Mob has 0 points, Endro has 1 point.

>Endro has 1 point
Seira, Fai and Mao make 3. End yourself Chinoposter.

Dennou Coil is hideous.
>The problem here isn't digital animation
The problem is that digital animation decided to celebrate the cinematic liberation of lighting from the limitations of the real world and physical compositions by being more washed out and colorless than anything in any literal color filmstock's history. It continues to baffle and disgust me to this day.

>Dennou Coil is hideous.

In fairness sunsets look different depending on the weather, air quality and other factors.

Must be tough to be this desperate for visual stimulation that you need high contrast ratios at all times. You certainly have my condolences, given your extremely limited mental capacity to appreciate different artistic approaches. All I really get from your rant is
>it's different from what I pretend to like, hence it's ugly
Not sure what to make of that, but I certainly do pity you.

The difference between concrete on a bright sunny morning and overcast day in episode 6.
Call it what you will. Call me names. Throw up a red herring about how digital color doesn't have to be like this as if that isn't obvious.

so awful, worst art direction ever

this is so gay

so good, best art direction ever

the charatcter designs in this are are abslutly terrible

this gave me an eyegasm

Visual Direction is great.
But all visuals, no direction is terrible and a waste of time, money and resources.

Thanks for posting some garbage so we have someting to compare all the good works to.

>because he says so
>implying he knows what he's talking about

even the gird can't make some of these backgrounds and creatures look less shitty

Who is he?

I think that you got that backwards.

This is the one show you use to spot pseuds and contrarians in these threads.
If only anime as a whole was done like this.

VEG fags say the darnedest things

well it primarily is a visual medium soo...

Speaking of this, I need to make a grid of Giovanni no Shima.

Get shot by Vlad, you little worm. Not your island.

Best Naruto episode, and the funny thing is it was filler.

I know it's only 3 minutes, but I'm looking forward to Kobayashi's episode of Ekoda-chan next week.

Who is doing next week's episode? I've been waiting for Osamu Kobayashi. He is also directing Dororo 15. I like Ekoda-chan, not every episode is a hit but the good ones are really good.

Oh right, I forgot about that after a few episodes, I'll catch up at the end.
Surprisingly the best episode was the one of the Shougeki no Soma director.

Why do people consider this show deep? It was good but people seem to hold it as a 'you will not be ready dude this shit will blow your mind' show

>No matter how well I depict the scene of someone eating breakfast, in the end, it's just someone eating breakfast

As far as dystopia with thorough social commentary goes, it's pretty good for an anime. Much better than Psycho Pass for once.
Too bad that the direction and animation are so inconsistent and more often than not ugly.

>Who is doing next week's episode?
Osamu Kobayashi. And after that, it's Morimoto.

Star Driver had more soul than Utena. The problem is it was just shit.

I agree. Only talentless hacks rely on meme visuals.

The anchor scene was just atrocious. Time lapse of the week was anything but well directed.

There are two types of style: technical style and aesthetic style. Examples would be
>graphics vs aesthetics of a game (brown shooters in the late 00s has good graphics but bad aesthetics, while Hotline Miami's graphics are nothing special but its aesthetic is fantastic)
>special effects vs cinematography
>just using big words vs actual good prose
These aren't mutually exclusive (see Shadow of the Colossus, 2001 and Ulysses respectively) but are very different. Technical style is the pleb style, the phrase 'style over substance' is talking about technical style. However, aesthetic style IS substance. An insistence on plot is the number one indicator of a midwit who calls Mirror or Lolita style over substance.
There's a reason that you get made fun of for reading for the plot on Yea Forums or watching for the plot in arthouse film communities. Plot is a factor but it is not the only factor.

He asked for all substance/no style, not for all style/no substance.

Good stuff. I need to give this show another watch.

What are we suppose to see here?

>the phrase 'style over substance' is talking about technical style.
I don't think any of the shows on the chart have bad aesthetic, and good technical style though.

Enough to think that that was one of the lesser mob episodes.

Tits and asses aren't "soul".

I mean that that's what it's supposed to be applied to, but then midwits use it to talk about aesthetic style.
Sometimes I wonder if plotfags can appreciate a painting at all

So, not enough

Hype

Aku no Hana’s anime was a joke. You are kidding yourself.
