I probably just read too much before I actually started regularly listening to things. I watch all my anime raw, but my comprehension rate can be pretty variable. Super chuuni stuff like Index I've found to be really challenging at times since a lot of characters just speak really strangely about weird shit. Other things are a cakewalk and I don't really have to think at all.

Of course, sometimes I have problems with reading as well, but most of the time I can generally parse out challenging stuff in writing better than in spoken words.

Because were on an anime and manga board. It would be wise to learn the language so that we can watch episodes earlier and play untranslated VN and games.

I think that the most difficult thing to practice is speaking, specially if you are alone, and even if not, it is still tough, maybe someone who is dedicated to it will spend one or two years in Japan for that.
