Which shonen trope is worse?
>The nonsensical chuunibyou "Edgy Rage" power up
or
>The childish and overused "Nakama power" power up
Edgy power depends on the context. Nakama power is always fucking stupid.
nakama power boost is stupid
Nakama working together isn't as stupid
>Edgy power depends on the context
They are just as bad.
>The childish and overused "Nakama power" power up
Raiku did it all The time in two of His mangas and it was kino
>"Edgy Rage" power up
I love this one
>They are just as bad.
Nothing in this world is Just bad
Raiku did it well because Gash Bell was mostly focused on friendship so it fit thematically.
That manga is so underrated.
Like I said, depends. If it takes a serious toll on the protag I think it's cool. Nakama inspiration will always be terrible because it always happens when the protag is at their limit, and basically acts as a free card to get out of any situation.
What happens if you combine edgy rage and nakama power?
>because it always happens when the protag is at their limit, and basically acts as a free card to get out of any situation.
Exactly like rage boosts then.
Not that guy, but goku going SSJ still counts as rage power up. And it's one of the best power ups of all time.
Both of them can be utilized well or poorly depending on the situation.
It's the fact it's not free sometimes that makes it better than inspiration. Emphasis on sometimes. They're both dumb but it really depends on the anime.
Rage powerups can be cool if they come with drawbacks that actually affect the characters, like Guts getting fucked up when using the Berserk armor.
Power of friendship is 99% of the time bullshit
Then you cover the stupidity of each one individually.
Usually you can't do that since rage boost is at it's best when a nakama goes down, but if you're already using nakama power then you probably shouldn't be jobbing still.
Also rage power boosts tap into dark edginess. Usually not compatible with the love/friendship boosts.
Maybe something like this?
youtube.com
Wouldn't call him a real nakama though and they ain't really that ragey.
I miss Lordgenome.
>That manga is so underrated
His other friendship nakama Power manga is even more underrated tham Gash bell
Isn't that what happened with Yusuke vs. Toguro?
the one with the talking animals? I need to check it out
Do a story time
I don't find either of them offensive. Depending on the execution both can be great.
The cliche that actually ruins shonen is power creep.
>power creep.
TORIKO make it work
>character is a combat "genius"
lmao
It did? Explain; I never read it
Wasn't any teamwork beside kuwabara getting killed.
Wasn't edgy or angry enough to be rage power up, but I guess it's closer to rage than nakama.
Both are the same, emotion-fueled power up. It's an overused and easily misused trope, but it isn't bad on its own.
For example, it's completely justified in setups where power is emotion-based.
Not entirely true.
Nakama power can be fueled by emotion, but could also be about teamwork. In reality it's a rosy cover of "everyone working together" when in reality it's "let's gang up on that one guy"
They can be good if the circumstances work. For example, Shieldbro's rage power up happened at the oddest place in the story during some side mission. It should be during a climatic, game-changing moment.
True that, but teamwork-based nakama power is way more justifiable. We know from RL teams > individuals, so this trope doesn't hurt suspension of disbelief on its own.
The writing might get you out of disbelief though. There's a whole world of difference between
>They won because, as close friends, they know each other enough to perform a great coordinated attack.
and
>They won because they're fighting together! Their friendship is the best power up!
