Alright then, lets look at kamisato who had his best reception after his arc concluded and got better over time. Lets look at Thor who has had roughly no opinion change on him. Lets look at Orsola who as I said was largely welcomed back into having a role again. So long as the characters stays under a certain value of screentime (that I dont have an absolute value for so dont ask me for one), more appearances will be seen in a positive light. When a character has lots of screentime already (Mikoto, Hamazura, Accelerator) more screentime is viewed poorly.

Actually, everyone in the threads that I remember liked the volumes and Kamisato and only complained about his harem and Yuuitsu.

You have to think outside the box. Magic characters don't only need to be in magic arcs, and science characters don't only need to be in science arcs. The way Kamachi writes him into stuff does come off as too random, but now that he's here you just take it for what it is. Back in the day people would be elated to see a science character messing around with magic side ones like Lessar and Birdway, now it's just "this character doesn't fit".

The fact that he doesn't give a fuck about magic babble and goes with the flow is unique in itself. Accel tries to take it all in and make himself grow in power and knowledge. Touma has to pay attention because it allows him to use IB to his full capability. Hamazura went and manipulated Kanzaki and the others by just bullshitting his way through like he always does with the magic circle shit. I'm not saying you have to like that, but no other character approaches magic shit this way.

The reason that Beetle is not as interesting is because he hasn't actually done anything of actual significance in the plot post-Kakine transformation. That's not really his fault so much as a lack of narrative focus. Beetle was a fine character back when he was struggling with the existential consequences of being.. well, a Dark Matter beetle.

After that, he's basically just shown up to protect people, but if Kamachi wanted to, it would be simple to give Beetle something else to do.

But Touma is doing unique things, Accel is too.

I honestly don't remember shit about Beetle besides that one time that a character more interesting than him beat the shit out of him.

I believe like the user above said, Kamachi is waiting for an entire arc to flush out both Beetle and Kakine together and possibly merge them back into one with one last redemption sequence (after a battle with Accel of course). The symbolism connections with ra hoor khuit, the rivalry with Accel, his link with the "light side" aka Fremea are all there. Kamachi has all the cards, he just needs time to build a solid story that compensates for the lack of screen time for the supposed "spare plan"

I hope the Sword of State starts talking so we can have Saito and Henrietta adventures.

Despite introducing massive amounts of new characters, often with every new volume, NT's actual cast feels awkwardly small at times. And it's not just familiar faces from OT who can get shafted (just look at Fiamma for someone who even shows up but ends up irrelevant nonetheless), but even ones that are original to NT itself. Beetle looked like he was going to go somewhere, and then dropped off the face of the earth. Heck, does anyone remember that Thor existed? He just disappeared without it seeming like his personal problems were actually resolved in any way.

People mention Thor like every other thread. I still believe he's punching out Hazards in Canada. I agree though that the cast of NT can seem small recently. The first half was pretty good at mixing the cast around, and nt20 was decent at bringing old members back, but a lot of the other stuff has just been focused on the same small team. At least a good part of that can be attributed to Aleister taking the spotlight though. Probably after his arc is done for the time being we'll get more mix ups.

Accelerator gets the best development. Misaki got her backstory fleshed out, Kakine's existential and moral crisis is extremely interesting, and has got potential to be among the best of the level 5s. Gunha pumps out my warrior spirit, and Misaki's pain is gutwrenching. Too much favor for Mikoto, she's decent otherwise but I am willing to give her a raise with her behavior with Mikoto. Mugino is distastefully arrogant and is essentially picking fights she cannot win and risking herself. To top it all off, she does not feel anything about her mental bitchiness back then.

Look, I don't need legacy characters to become the focus of a new subplot (albeit there are arguably several legacy characters who feel as though their respective roles haven't been properly concluded, but this is another topic). For those that don't necessarily have a lingering stake in the plot, they can continue to not be invested in the current happenings of the universe, but simple side scenes or even just acknowledgements that they still exist would be welcome from time to time.

It leaves a bad taste when the likes of say, Itsuwa, gets reduced to a running joke for being MIA for seven years after exiting stage left in the middle of a gag. You don't have to make these old characters important, but having just little nods can help the world and setting seem more lively and filled out.

In Etzali's case all he had to say was Etzali fucked off back to Mexico to fix his cabal, but instead the character is caught in a perpetual, "did he or did he not resolve everything" loop to the point where people just claim his story is over.

I know there are old characters whose arcs havent been concluded thats why I only pointed at Etzali and not Awaki who as I recall still has her companions in jail. Itsuwa was never a particularly big character even before she left. The gag scenes she had *were* the nods and acknowledgement she was getting to make the world more lively. The story was focused on AC for a long time so she didnt show up. Thats perfectly natural. As soon as we came back to England she got another nod, ignoring that she got an entire SS for herself in the meantime, you really should pick a better example. Awaki is a much better example for someone who probably should have shown up once or twice with some nods to them. They exist, but I wouldnt say characters like Etzali who by all rights got everything he wanted are among them.
Does Kamachi really need to hold your hand and tell you exactly which characters are living happily ever after for you to be able to deduce that someone who saved who they wanted and hasnt been dragged into anything else since is doing alright?

I'm pretty sure you're joking but in case you arent he ceded his spot by mikoto's side to touma. It being a frequent thing for Kamachi's characters is already something I've agreed with and I've mentioned examples. Etzali however is not one of them.

Awaki really should have gotten some time in NT18. Getting into the windowless building is, or at least was, exactly her job. It sucks that such a great opportunity for her was stolen by a convenient hole from the previous volume.

NT17 and 16 as well was a perfect time to cameo lots of AC characters but it just never happened.

The best thing I can come up with is that the dragons are connected to IB, since it's been said before that Kamijou Touma is not using IB to it's full potential. Apperently it's possible to use IB's effect outside of his right hand, and maybe the dragons are just "that" IB's form to allow him to negate attacks even outside of his right hand.

It's dawned on me that the Birdway twins are the best mates for Touma. As we all know, Touma loves eggs. But he's unfortunate and the only eggs he gets are not on sale and the ones in his arm. See, this is where Birdway comes in, she buy some eggs and hatch them. "But user, why would you want her to do that?" you ask? It's simple: Chickens make eggs. Those eggs in turn can be used to make more chickens, which means even more eggs. Soon Touma would have an entire flock of chickens, which means he now has access to a near unlimited number of eggs FOR FREE. This is great in multiple ways, for one it solves the Index Conundrum: if Touma has infinite free eggs, Index cant eat them all and he wont lose any capital. More over, he can have Birdway keep hatching more eggs for more chickens, which allows him ample opportunity to butcher unneeded chickens for their meat. This would help Touma get the essential nutrients he needs to fight magic, as well as vary his dinner plate. The extra money that he's no longer spending on food can then be used to buy supplements to the eggs and chickens, allowing for him to have a more balanced diet. This also helps his peace of mind, since he wont be stressing about the egg sales and will be able to rest easier when he gets the chance. This also gives Index something to do by raising and maintaining chickens and eggs, which teaches her responsibility. Furthermore, Touma can now eat eggs raw and get Rocky boxing powers, making his punches even more effective.

Overall, this leads to a healthier, less tired, financially stable, and less stressed Touma, essentially giving him a massive power up to combat. This is why Birdway would be best for him; Mikoto's and Index's butts are just too fat and they would crush the eggs. Birdway's ass is perfectly suited for optimal egg hatching. Birdway similarly has many eggs with great potential inside her. If Touma fertilizes her, Birdway can lay more eggs and produce more Birdways to hatch even more egg
