Because he is stuck in between being an evil overlord and being someone 'pretending' to be an evil overlord.
The character fails because it's impossible to reconcile a regular person transported into a game world with the inhuman monster who Ainz is half the time.
This is especially bad in the LN where the author wanted it both ways in later volumes and the whole thing becomes a confusing mess where Ainz is going about committing atrocities while seemingly having no motivation to do so.

As far as him being motivated by his friends from the guild that didn't seem to be a motivating factor at all in anything he does. But I'm sure his friends would be thrilled by him using their creations from a video game to slaughter living sapient beings.
And he doesn't learn shit. If anything he regresses as the author seemingly just forgets how Ainz was established somewhat conflicted by his situation.
