It's the best in the fact that it was made to be the best and shows it
But objectively? They didn't plan to do anything after L, so there are pacing issues (even though I think Near's arc is underrated). I also think the world wasn't explored as much as it could have been. The writing focuses heavily on face-offs and dramatic tension, but not so much on research of the shinigami or death note (aside from necessary tests done by Light).
I think Death Note was amazing at what it tried to do, but it has its flaws, and the scope of the story was too narrow in my opinion.
