There are some details in the chapters that were made as season 1 that the anime skipped, but nothing really important. The drawing in those is extremely shit tho. It's not really necessary to read them. Season 2 is almost an perfect 1:1 adaptation, except for episode 12.

For season 3 however, I think it's completely necessary to read the manga (from chapter 51 to chapter 72). Too much was changed (most of it was just pacing stuff, and some prefer the anime pace; however there a good amount of characterization and important moments that were just skipped in the anime. You get the general idea and what happens with the anime, but if you want the full picture, reading chapters 51-71 is a must. Also some moments (like Grisha vs Frieda) are just better in the manga.

Eren keeps Zeke alive, somebody with a fundamental role on his plan. That's what he gains.
