Making subs is relatively easy. If you do it right, it's no harder than just translating into Notepad or whatever. Getting them just right can get a bit complicated, but to get started with decent results. Please excuse >reddit spacing
>Get a sub file, delete all the lines and use it to make your own. I would say go to anime tosho, find any 720p HorribleSubs release and download the attachments (.ass file and Liberation Sans.tff or whatever the main font they use is). Or the style from whichever fansub you like.
>Download Aegisub. Open your sub file in Aegisub, delete all the subs that are in there already and drag the video file into it.
>Click and drag in the audio wave form around dialogue and write the translation in the main box. This'll be obvious when you start. You can also use the keys under your left hand to replay the audio selection, commit+start a new line, etc. Just play around for a minute or two.
>Aim for like 150ms of lead-in and 350ms of lead-out so subs don't appear and disappear too quickly and distractingly. If two lines are close together, extend the first so it meets up with the second.
Also download mkvtoolnix: this is where you put the video and the finished sub file and mux them to an mkv. Add the font(s) in the attachments tab.

That looks fine to me. Maybe try Ghandi Sans (AKA GJM-Sans, because GJM uses it; similarly, LT Finnegan is sometimes called Commie Sans). I just recommended grabbing an HS file because when people start from scratch they sometimes don't touch the default and end up with tiny Arial and giant thick border+shadow.
Though since you asked, maybe bump up the border and shadow to 2.5 and 1.2 and adjust the shadow so it's slightly transparent.
Also, non-black borders are fine, but generally darker looks better. Even if it looks really dark in the preview, once you watch the actual episode you'll see the nice purple colour but it'll contrast better with the white. (And definitely leave that white.)
