He happened to be aware of his strengths and weaknesses and acted accordingly. He's inept at any sort of physical combat, so he avoids it at all costs, but he can use trickery and adaptability to poison his enemies and make himself resistant/immune to whatever they throw at him, provided it isn't just straight-up melee.
