We can all agree that Brotherhood was vastly superior to the 2003 adaptation of the manga, correct?
We can all agree that Brotherhood was vastly superior to the 2003 adaptation of the manga, correct?
Duh.
As an adaption, but brotherhood falls short thematically, tonally, and story-wise.
It's nothing more than a mediocre shounen.
I prefer 2003
So this is what it's like to be retarded on the internet.
See
In all respects other than the opening episodes of setup - and even then the 2003 version isn't universally better, just partially. The setup for Maes Hughes' death and the Nina debacle is where Brotherhood falls short due to rushing, though the execution is better.
You're not going to bait me.
If you want to have a real discussion, I'm up for it, but you're going to have to support your claim first.
It's been my experience that people who prefer brotherhood either haven't actually seen the original series, or are tumblr zoomers who just bandwagoned with the rest of the internet and MAL. I'm not saying you're in that category, but you probably are.
2003 starts off well and good and then veers off into pure suffering.
Brotherhood starts off paling in comparsion to both 03 and the manga in many ways before immedialty getting better.
Also no matter what some faggots say, ending of mangahood is infinetly superior to 2003
Yes, but it still doesn't live up to the source material. Even after catching up to the point where 2003 nominally split off the pacing is still rushed and it doesn't translate the humor well.
Brotherhood relied too heavily on the audiences understanding of the series and mechanics of the world and alchemy due to 2003 existing. There were some really important moments that were made to be smaller and not as impactful due to this, and it affected the overall tone of the series. Brotherhood didn't do as well of a job at getting you attached to characters, or making you feel true, raw, inexplicable emotion for the struggles on every side of the war the Elrics were fighting.
Brotherhood is an excellent "another story" style anime, where as 2003 was truly special and gave greater implications for the characters. The worldbuilding was so incredible and the way they handled the mechanics of alchemy was truly something magical.
I would have killed for them to not make brotherhood, but to make a sequel to 2003 in which Ed and Al attempted to find a way back to "Shamballa" with rocket science and space exploration after meeting with Werner Von Braun. Can you imagine how tight it would be?
2003's darker tone automatically makes it a superior adaptation.
>dark tone means its better
Shut your whore mouth.
Nah, 2003 version is slightly better.
Brotherhood was a casual version where everyone gets a happy ending.
>2003
>protagonist pay for his crimes
>plot full of holes because it tried to do (and did) something bigger and better
>stones are ultra rare
>finally get the stone and use it for literally damage control
>characters are incredible humane and also make terrible mistakes
>brotherhood
>generic shounem
>generic villains who just wanted friends
>holocaust and stones everywhere
>could have fixed it all since got a stone early but didn't, otherwise the story would end too fast
>no lessons learned, it's ok to mess with something you shouldn't
>the manlet start growing again otherwise is not a happy ending
>everyone is happy yay
liking the 'darker' adaptation does not make you more mature
Having a bigger budget doesn't mean it's better.
the 03 anime is awful, has anyone actually watched the fucking thing in the past decade? It's filled with monster of the week cringe with the same overblown message of 'The villain is just like Edward Elric!' and it ends with no actual resolution
>cringe
Stopped reading there.
both adaptations had a similar budget
03 is objectively superior, that is all
>Stopped reading
Stopped reading there
>2003 appeals to edgelords who's atheism is the only good thing about them.
>Brotherhood appeals to people who like good stories.
i watched 2003 after brotherhood and yet i cant remember the plot of 2003 and can fully tell you everything in brotherhood. i prefer brotherhood because i remember brotherhood. there were some things i liked in 2003 more though. al taking the exam which in brotherhood i wondered "why dosent al become a state alchemist too?" i dont remember too much of 2003 but i think there was an episode where kimblee transmutes al into a bomb? if that happened i think thats cool af.
Brotherhood is more consistent in it's writing, themes and production.
The 03 adaptation has that studio bones problem where most of their scriptwriters are chimpanzees. It's filled with stupid filler episodes and awful anime original characters, Dante sucks ass and the ending is the worst thing I've seen in my life.
Brotherhood and the manga are for children.
Who fucking cares, just read the manga
the manga is a classic hero's journey story, it retains appeal for adult audiences
>generic villains who just wanted friends
>no lessons learned, it's ok to mess with something you shouldn't
>could have fixed it all since got a stone early but didn't, otherwise the story would end too fast
You didn't watch brotherhood did you?
your opinion is objectively bad, that is all
There was definitely some tight shit in 2003 that got passed over by Brotherhood because bones felt "you've already seen this" was an excuse. When I say "Brotherhood is better", I definitely mean it's better as an overall story - a thematically consistent and satisfying whole. the 2003 version for sure does some things better, and some great things Brotherhoods skips, but it fails to deliver an ending that is in any way satisfying and it's a mess in terms of character arcs and general philosophy.
I really need to go back and determine a watch order that gets you the opening from 2003 and the rest of Brotherhood in as seamless a way as possible.
I can agree with this. For me I think a good way to experience the series is to read the manga first, then watch brotherhood, then check out 2003.
Read volume 1-8 of the manga, then start at episode 15 of Brotherhood. The 03 anime adds way too much story-altering filler even to canon parts.
While I'm willing to read manga, I know some people who aren't a big fan of that idea, and I don't see a problem with that. Seeing as I've experienced all three already, this is more for assembling a watch list for re-watches or recommendations - in which case the action and presentation of the anime is a big sell.
